Did you hear there’s a big game on Monday? Super Bowl LIX kicks off on Monday morning and sure it’s a big event but how will it compare to that BBL Final?
We’ll give it to the Yanks, it is a slightly bigger spectacle than that one Wednesday night in January and we at Ladbrokes cannot wait for a big game between the Chiefs and the Eagles.
The NFL is growing in Australia but we will forgive you if you still don’t know a truckload about the sport, to help you out we’ve put together this article for you to study and rattle off to your mates/co workers on Monday morning so it sounds like you know more about the Super Bowl than you really do.
Here are 10 things you didn’t know about the Super Bowl.
1. It Was Originally Named By The Chiefs Owner
Lamar Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, is credited with coining the term “Super Bowl.”
He reportedly came up with the name while watching his children play with a toy called a “Super Ball.”
Lamar passed away in 2006 but the Hunt family still own the Chiefs.
2. The Super Bowl Trophy Is Named After Vince Lombardi
The Super Bowl trophy is named after Vince Lombardi, the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers. Lombardi led the Packers to victories in Super Bowls I and II.
The iconic trophy was designed by Tiffany and Co. Vice President Oscar Riedner back in 1966 who apparently drew the design on a napkin during a meeting with the NFL.
3. It’s Expensive To Advertise During The Super Bowl
You probably know this one already but it isn’t cheap to run a Super Bowl ad.
The cost of a 30-second advertisement during the Super Bowl can reach well over $7.5 million USD.
That’s why companies put so much time and effort into their commercials, you’d hate to spend all that money for a windows movie maker sort’ve situation…
4. It’s The Most Bet On Sporting Event In the US
In Australia it’s the Melbourne Cup but over in the US it’s all about the football.
With gambling becoming legal in several states over the last few years, US punters are wagering more and more on the big game.
5. It’s Attracts A Lot of Eyeballs
Since the first Super Bowl, the game has consistently been the highest-rated program on television in the United States.
In the US alone, last years Super Bowl was watched by 115.1million viewers and for those playing at home, the population of the United States is 330 Million.
6. It’s The Second Biggest Eating Day For Americans
Behind Thanksgiving, Super Bowl Sunday is a massive day for food.
Buffalo Wings, 7 Layer Dip, Pigs in a Blanket and Hot Dogs are just some of the snacks you’ll find at a Super Bowl Party in the US.
It’s estimated that 3.5 Million kgs of Avocados are turned in Guacamole on Super Bowl Sunday.
7. Tom Brady Has More Super Bowl Wins Than Any Team
I’ve put this at Number 7 for a reason.
Tom Brady retired with a record… you guessed it, seven rings.
There are only two teams that come close to Tom Brady, his former New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers both have six Super Bowl banners each.
8. Winners Get A Big Pay Cheque For Advertising Disney
It all started in 1987 when Giants QB Phil Simms yelled “I’m gonna go to Disney World” after winning the Super Bowl.
Disney paid him a massive 75k for the plug and since then a player has said those lines on camera every year since.
To keep the lawyers happy, every player has to sign an agreement in the week leading up to the game because they don’t know who will be play a starring role in the game until it happens and in the postgame chaos, you never know who will be able to yell into the camera.
9. It Takes A Lot Of Balls To Play Football.
216 Special Super Bowl balls are made for the big event and 108 are given to each team.
Half of those are intended to be used during the game and each team uses 54 for practice, those footballs aren’t fresh out of the box though.
The equipment technicians have their own methods to get balls ready to be played with.
10. A Ticket Will Cost You An Arm And A Leg
It’s the hottest ticket in town and if you want to go and cheer your team on be prepared to open your wallet.
Ticket prices just continue to go up and up with the average price for an SB ticket is reportedly going to set you back almost $10,000 USD.
Even they players are feeling the pinch trying to accomodate the requests of friends and family.
The most expensive tickets will cost you upwards of $40k and no that doesn’t mean you get to catch a pass from Pat Mahomes.
