Sofia Kenin vs Bernarda Pera
12.00am
Back Kenin to Cover the Games Handicap (-2.5) @ $1.75
Americans Sofia Kenin and Bernarda Pera square off in the pick of the Charleston Open’s first-round matches as the clay swing gets underway.
Pera won the pair’s only previous clash, 6-2 5-7 6-3 at the 2022 Tennis in the Land tournament.
After a strong showing at the Dubai Championships – where she beat Donna Vekic, Marta Kostyuk and Jasmine Paolini – world No.46 Kenin had a modest Sunshine Double, losing in the second round of both events…and getting double-bagelled by Coco Gauff in Miami.
Pera, ranked 84th, beat Ajla Tomljanovic first up at the Miami Masters before running into eventual finalist Jessica Pegula. She featured at the Puerto Vallarta Open last week but went down to Rebeka Masarova in the Round of 16.
The 30-year-old is something of a clay specialist, winning both of her WTA titles on the surface (in Budapest and Hungary in 2022) and achieving her best grand slam result at the 2023 French Open, reaching the fourth round.
Kenin was the Roland Garros runner-up back in 2020 – her only clay-court final. Though inconsistent, Kenin can still match it with the tour’s top players and anything close to her best should be enough to account for Pera.
Olivia Gadecki vs Hailey Baptiste
12.00am
Back Baptiste to Win 2-0 @ $1.80
A doubles champion here in 2021, world No.98 Hailey Baptiste lines up against world No.99 Olivia Gadecki in the first round of the Charleston Open.
They have met once before, with Baptiste coming from a set down in 2022 French Open qualifying.
Aussie Gadecki has just one win to her credit in 2025, a handy upset of Moyuka Uchijima at the Singapore Tennis Open in January. The 22-year-old lost from a set up against compatriot Daria Saville at the Puerto Vallarta Open last week.
Baptiste produced some encouraging form at the Sunshine Double, taking Danielle Collins to three sets in a second-round loss at Indian Wells, and upsetting Olga Danilovic and 12th seed Daria Kasatkina in Miami before going down to Naomi Osaka in three.
The American has a clear advantage in ball-striking power and current form – expect her to be too strong for Gadecki.
Rinky Hijikata vs Christopher Eubanks
1.00am
Back Hijikata to Win @ $1.73
Aussie Rinky Hijikata and American Christopher Eubanks meet in the first round of the US Men’s Clay Court Championships for the second straight year.
Hijikata is 2-0 against Eubanks, winning a 2021 Australian Open qualifier and grinding out a 7-6 7-6 result here in Houston last year.
World No.86 Hijikata made it to the second round of both Sunshine Double events, beating Alexander Shevchenko at Indian Wells and Hamad Medjedovic in Miami. He put up a decent fight in respective losses to Brandon Nakashima and Novak Djokovic.
Outside the top 100 less than two years after cracking the top 30 with a run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Eubanks lost in qualifying to Nikoloz Basilashvili at Indian Wells and went down in the first round to Reilly Opelka in Miami.
The 28-year-old has just one tour-level win to his credit in 2025 – against Alibek Kachamazov at the Open Occitanie – and a repeat loss to Hijikata appears the most likely outcome here.
Ethan Quinn vs Jordan Thompson
1.00am
Back Thompson to Cover the Games Handicap (-2.5) @ $1.83
Jordan Thompson is looking to parlay a form reversal at the Miami Masters into a deep run at the Charleston Open, where he is seeded sixth and meets American tyro Ethan Quinn in the first round.
World No.37 Thompson has had an injury-hit start to the season and lost to Corentin Moutet in the first round at Indian Wells after six weeks on the sidelines.
But he bounced back in Miami, beating Marcos Giron and 28th seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard before a hard-fought straight-sets loss to world No.2 Alexander Zverev.
A relative newcomer to the tour, 21-year-old Quinn rose to a career-high No.137 by reaching the last 16 in Dallas an Delray Beach as a qualifier.
Some impressive qualifying wins got him into the main draw of both Sunshine Double events, but he lost in straight sets to Zizou Bergs at Indian Wells and Tristan Schoolkate at the Miami Masters, winning just two games in the latter.
Their sole match to date was at a hard-court Challenger event in Charleston in 2022, Thompson prevailing in three sets. Quinn’s powerful forehand and rocket first serve can cause the veteran some problems, but Thompson still shapes as the overwhelming value option.
