Ladbrokes Tip: The TJ Smith Stakes serves as a good All Aged Stakes form race to follow

The All Aged Stakes is one of two top level Group 1 races run on a Saturday towards the end of April at Randwick Racecourse during the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

After the two The Championships meetings that proceed it, All Aged Stakes Day is headlined by the namesake race and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) for two-year-olds.

Offering $600,000 in total prize money the All Aged Stakes winner takes out $344,000 for connections. The weight-for-age classic is a middle distance sprint contested over 1400m and a key lead-up into the race is the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) run at the Randwick track a fortnight earlier. Trapeze Artist (2018) became the first since Bentley Biscuit (2007) to win the TJ Smith Stakes – All Aged Stakes double.

The latest edition of the All Aged Stakes took place on Saturday April 21, 2018 .

All Aged Stakes Odds & Betting

All Aged Stakes betting markets are usually led by horses coming off a top two finish in a Group 1 Sydney lead-up earlier in the autumn. From 2004 – 2018 just four All Aged Stakes winners ran worse than second in their lead-up runs including Dissident (2015) who improved on a Futurity Stakes third at Caulfield in late February, English (2016) who ran third in the TJ Smith Stakes in her final lead-up and Tivaci in 2017 who improved on a TJ Smith Stakes fourth.

The Futurity Stakes – All Aged Stakes double was achieved just a couple of years earlier by three-year-old All Too Hard (2013).

Favourites have an excellent recent record in the race with seven of the 13 winners from 2006 – 2018 jumping as the punters’ pick, most recently Trapeze Artist (2018). The last double figure winner was back in 2001 when El Mirada ($31) scored an upset over third placed favourite Sunline, who won the editions either side in 2000 and 2002.

Three-year-olds have a recent good strike rate with four of the seven winners from 2012 – 2018, while mares have more than held their own with six wins since 2000 plus the filly Atlantic Jewel getting the job done of the boys in 2012 and English saluting as a three-year-old filly in 2016.

2018 All Aged Stakes Betting

The All Aged Stakes 2018 betting odds will be listed below as soon as markets on the mid-April Group 1 event are released.

All Aged Stakes Field

The All Aged Stakes final field will feature a collection of the season’s best weight-for-age performers however the race hasn’t attracted capacity line-ups in recent years. The largest All Aged Stakes field since 1983, when 15 starters took to the stalls, is 14 in both 1999 and 2009.

Under 10 starters gathered for nine of the 12 editions from 2005 – 2016. The smallest All Aged Stakes field in the past 30 years or so was just five in 1984 when Emancipation won.

Horses come into the event via a number of different lead-ups including the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and Melbourne’s Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m). All Aged Stakes nominations close on the Monday before the race with final acceptances taken on the Wednesday.

2018 All Aged Stakes Field

The official All Aged Stakes 2018 field is announced by Racing NSW the Wednesday leading-up to the race and the full line-up will be announced below once released.

The 2018 All Aged Stakes Final Field attracted 13 horses including last start TJ Smith Stakes winning colt Trapeze Artist and last year’s runner-up Le Romain drawn out wide in gate 13.

Update: Australian Bloodstock’s globetrotting import Red Cardinal (12) has been scratched from the 2018 All Aged Stakes field. The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, including a possible Doomben Cup run, remains on the cards for the now Darren Weir-trained stayer whose only run down under was an 11th in last year’s Melbourne Cup. He hasn’t raced since due to a knee injury, but could run first-up at Caulfield carrying top weight in the Anniversary Vase (1400m) on Saturday if the track there is a Good (4) or worse.

Update: A further two All Aged Stakes scratchings have taken place with the Kris Lees-trained #5 Clearly Innocent (7) coming out leaving the Newcastle trainer with one runner, last year’s second placegetter Le Romain, and the Chris Waller-trained #7 Endless Drama (10) also out giving his horseman two remaining chances led by Tom Melbourne.

All Aged Stakes Tips

All Aged Stakes tips favour proven Group 1 performers in Sydney coming off autumn features like the Doncaster Mile a fortnight earlier at the track over 200m further or Melbourne’s Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) held in February.

The Doncaster Mile – All Aged Stakes double hasn’t been achieved however since Sunline (2002).

Sprinters stepping up from the 1200m of the TJ Smith Stakes during The Championships have a good recent record and make a nice All Aged Stakes tip with both Hot Danish (2010) and Hay List (2011) coming off a second in that lead-up for their wins, English (2016) improving on a TJ Smith Stakes third for her win as a three-year-old and Tivaci (2017) coming off a TJ Smith Stakes fourth before his win in the weight-for-age feature. In 2018 the All Aged Stakes tips favoured a win by Trapeze Artist and he won for the punters completing the TJ Smith Stakes – All Aged double as a three-year-old.

Our Ladbrokes’ insider All Aged Stakes 2018 betting tips and exotic selections on one of the last autumn Group 1 races will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page to see the weight-for-age horses to back and sack in your Sydney Saturday racing tips.

  • 1st: #10 TRAPEZE ARTIST ($2.35)
  • 2nd: #1 LE ROMAIN ($8.50)
  • 3rd: #3 HARTNELL ($9)

Sticking with the firming and deserving favourite TRAPEZE ARTIST ($2.35) who wasn’t even meant to run in the TJ Smith Stakes originally, but won that by two lengths defeating Redzel. This was always on the agenda and the 1400m makes him the one to beat as he led all-the-way for the four length Golden Rose win over the distance last spring. Gun three-year-old in flying form and cannot bet against. Kris Lees-trained runner LE ROMAIN ($8.50) looks fit, ran second last year and can improve on the TJ Smith Stakes fourth. HARTNELL ($9) capable of an upset on his best day. Won the CF Orr Stakes over the 1400m first-up before a third in the Peter Young (1800m), things went amiss in the Australian Cup (2000m) when 10th but this track / distance show him as a dual runner-up from two attempts.

All Aged Stakes Form Guide

The All Aged Stakes form guide is a must to look over before betting as it gives punters all the essential information like the jockeys, trainers and barriers of the gallopers in the field. Although barriers aren’t of all that much important at Randwick over 1400m the most successful All Aged Stakes barrier since 1983 producing 12 winners is gate seven,  Trapeze Artist (7 of 10 in 2018) the most recent champ from the barrier.

That is followed closely by barrier one with six winners, the latest to jump from the inside alley being Atlantic Jewel (2012) who is one of two fillies to win the race in the past 30 years along with English (2016).

Gai Waterhouse is the dominant All Aged Stakes winning trainer with five winners since 1997, the latest being Bentley Biscuit (2007) and English (2016). Jim Cassidy is the most successful All Aged Stakes jockey in the past 30 years with four winners including dual champion Rough Habit (1992 – 1993). He also rode Waterhouse’s 2003 winner Arlington Road and the 2015 champion Dissident.
