The Bill Stutt Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds held under the lights at Moonee Valley Racecourse in late September / early October on Moir Stakes Night during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting’s feature race is the Group 1 AJ Moir Stakes (1000m), while the Bill Stutt Stakes is the key support act on the card along with the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) for the mares. Bill Stutt Stakes Field

The Stutt Stakes field attracts the season’s most promising three-year-old milers and youngsters looking to step out over more distance later in the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Horses in the mix usually come off a lead-up Melbourne run and the Listed Exford Plate (1400m) at Flemington a fortnight before has produced a number of Stutt Stakes winners in recent years including Sovereign Nation (7th in 2015) and Showtime (5th in 2017). Graduates out of the Stutt Stakes field are often heading towards the Caulfield Guineas over the same distance and in 2015 the Stutt Stakes winner Sovereign Nation ran fourth in the Group 1 to Press Statement. The year before the 2014 Stutt Stakes third placed Kumaon also ran fourth in the Guineas next start.

  • 1st: #4 Masculino ($4.60) – Mick Price-trained Smart Missile colt was impressive here last time out with an all-the-way win over 1509m and he can get up on the speed again tonight from the good barrier (2) and make his own luck again. The mile is a non-issue and should be rock hard fit after back-to-back wins in the lead-up.
  • 2nd: #1 The Mission ($9) – The big Stutt Stakes market mover backed into $9 from $16, so could be worth following. Won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over the mile in Sydney as a three-year-old, but has been out of the money in both his runs this time in. Sees Moonee Valley for the first time on the quick back-up after the 13th in the Golden Rose. An easier grade here, will enjoy getting back up to a mile and shapes-up as a danger with ran predicted as a known wet-tracker.
  • 3rd: #2 Azazel ($4.60) – Tony McEvoy-trained Snitzel grey was fourth two back at this track beaten only 1.4 lengths and then raced down the Flemington straight on September 16 behind a star-studded field in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m). Finished off really well when only 2.35 lengths back seventh to the Blue Diamond winner Catchy. Needs to handle the mile, but has claims.
