Ladbrokes Tip: Caulfield Cup winners often back-up in the Melbourne Cup over the two miles at Flemington

One of the two major Cups held in Melbourne each Spring Carnival, the Caulfield Cup takes place annually at Caulfield Racecourse in mid – late October and is Australia’s leading mile and a half handicap. Run over 2400m it attracts the season’s top stayers, many of which will progress onto a shot at the ‘race that stops a nation’ in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

The latest edition of the Caulfield Cup ran on Saturday October 21, 2017 and was won in an upset by 50/1 outsider Boom Time.

The 2018 Caulfield Cup runs on Saturday October 20, 2018.

Caulfield Cup Tips

Caulfield Cup tips can be found everywhere during the week leading up to the race but it is a notoriously tough event to pick the winner of as usually there’s a host of livewire chances competing for top spot in the markets and predictions. The best Caulfield Cup tip historically is to look at horses coming out of the Turnbull Stakes as it produced five Caulfield Cup winners from 2009 – 2017 including Jameka (2nd in 2016).

Other Caulfield Cup betting tips include looking for in-form four-year-old horses as this age group saluted four times from 2010 – 2017, while Caulfield Cup barriers seven and nine have produced the most winners since 1983.

2017 Caulfield Cup Tips

Our Ladbrokes exclusive Caulfield Cup 2017 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race with the spring stayers to back and sack in the mile and a half classic so stay tuned.

  • 1st: #7 VENTURA STORM ($11) – Hasn’t been all that much hype on this Lindsay Park-trained Group 1 winning import who is three-from-four over 2200m and over. Lead-up second to Winx in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) has been forgotten, but it was a great run and he finished ahead of Humidor (3rd) who is $8.50 in betting for Saturday’s rematch. Humidor carries 56kg Caulfield Cup top weight, while this Zoffany entire is down to 54kg in a gun barrier four draw with four-time Caulfield Cup winning hoop Damien Oliver in the saddle. Jameka improved on a lead-up Turnbull second to win last year’s Caulfield Cup and there’s plenty suggesting Ventura Storm can do the same and break his maiden status in Australia in a big race.
  • 2nd: #3 JOHANNES VERMEER ($4.40) – Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish raider who is all the rage in Caulfield Cup betting since the exclusion of the injured Admire Deus. Still at a pretty backable price if you fancy the favourites to do it three years straight. Debuted down under last Saturday running an excellent final 400m to finish runner-up in the Ladbrokes Stakes. Hasn’t won over the 2400m yet, but that performance suggests he can. Will get things his way settling closer to the pace, set by the fellow Lloyd Williams-owned Sir Isaac Newton, from barrier two with Ben Melham confident in the saddle. Set up for him he just needs to turn up.
  • 3rd: #17 LORD FANDANGO ($20) – Archie Alexander was close to tears when this German-bred stayer made the Caulfield Cup field via a Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes win last Saturday. Things could now pay off in a big way with the galloper into the Group on just 50kg. He is weighted to run the race of his life, did a personal best last weekend and if he runs the same can finish in the money from barrier nine, which has produced more Caulfield Cup winners than any other gate in the past three decades.

Caulfield Cup Field

The Caulfield Cup field is released on the Tuesday before the race runs on a Saturday in mid-October each year and has a capacity of 18 starters plus four emergencies. Aside from the Melbourne Cup and partially the Cox Plate, the Caulfield Cup Field earns some of the most attention during the whole calendar year of racing. Run under handicap conditions the race is open to horses aged three years and older and now attracts a truly international line-up with many imports and international raiders in the mix each season. The first hint of the final field happens when Caulfield Cup nominations are taken at the start of August, early entries often exceeding 200 horses.

Spring stayers may come into the Caulfield Cup field via a number of various lead-up races including the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington, which has produced more Caulfield Cup winners than any other lead-up in the past decade.

2017 Caulfield Cup Field

The official Caulfield Cup 2017 Final Field & Barriers are set for release on Tuesday October 17, 2017. This follows the new Caulfield Cup nomination deadline of Tuesday August 29, 2017, which is also when Melbourne Cup Nominations for 2017 close.

The 2017 Caulfield Cup late nominations are open one week after nominations, before the Caulfield Cup weights are announced on September 12, 2017. At midday on September 26, 2017 the Caulfield Cup 2017 First Acceptances are taken.

The 2017 Caulfield Cup Field is now out with just 17 horses to line-up in the mile and a half classic after the withdrawal of the injured Japanese import Admire Deus. Trainer Darren Weir saddles-up the 56kg top weight Humidor along with jockey Craig Williams’ new mount, Amelie’s Star. Updated Caulfield Cup odds on the final field are led by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish raider Johannes Vermeer who ran a brave second in last weekend’s Ladbrokes Stakes at the track. The other best out of that race was Jon Snow (3rd) who remains at double figures to win the Caulfield Cup 2017 despite having saluted over the 2400m in the autumn’s ATC Derby. Jon Snow is prepared by Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman who won the race in 2014 with Kiwi raider Mongolian Khan, and they also saddle-up one-time favourite Bonneval in the race on Saturday as she looks to atone for a sixth in the Ladbrokes Stakes.

The official 2017 Caulfield Cup Barrier Draw is now complete with race favourite Johannes Vermeer drawn a treat in barrier two, while the most successful Caulfield Cup barrier (since 1983) producing five recent winners is gate nine belonging this weekend to the Herbert Power Stakes winner Lord Fandango. Other key Caulfield Cup barriers in 2017 include the inside alley belonging to Harlem for Lindsay Park and the top weight Humidor drawn well better than midfield in barrier seven. Horses with wide Caulfield Cup barrier draws to overcome meanwhile include Sir Isaac Newton in the outside alley (17 of 17) and the three-time Group 1 winning mare Bonneval in gate 14.

2017 Caulfield Cup Nominations & Weights

The 2017 Caulfield Cup Nominations attracted 142 stayers including last year’s Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup placegetter Harntell allocated the 58kg top weight. The reigning Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (56.5kg) was the next heaviest weighted early entry in the Caulfield Cup weights for 2017. Trainer Darren Weir also had a strong hand in the Caulfield Cup nominations for 2017 with the likes of Humidor and Japanese import Admire Deus high up the early ratings.

2017 Caulfield Cup First Acceptances

The official Caulfield Cup 2017 First Acceptances closed on Tuesday September 26 and left 70 hopefuls in contention of a spot in the Caulfield Cup field. Among the 2017 Caulfield Cup First Acceptances are seven internationally-trained horses including Marmelo and Wicklow Brave. Ace Victorian trainer Darren Weir has seven Caulfield Cup horses left in the mix including recent Makybe Diva Stakes winner Humidor who leads all-in Caulfield Cup betting. The original Caulfield Cup top weight Hartnell is still in contention, but could bypass the race in favour of a run against Winx in the following weekend’s weight-for-age Cox Plate.

2017 Caulfield Cup Second Acceptances

The Caulfield Cup 2017 Second Acceptances are now out ahead of Saturday week’s spring major, the opening leg of the Spring Cups’ double. Just 36 runner remain in the mix for the capacity 18-starter Caulfield Cup field including early favourite Bonneval who won the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) last start and is engaged for a run this weekend in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m). Harlem earned a start in the Caulfield Cup this year winning the Naturalism Stakes, while Humidor could contest the race for trainer Darren Weir looking to atone for his disappointing third to Winx in the Turnbull Stakes.
