Each autumn the Coolmore Classic field attracts Australia’s best female sprinter-milers and has a capacity of 16 runners. The race was last run with a full field of fillies and mares in 2014 when Steps In Time won.

The female gallopers in the Coolmore Classic field come from a variety of different lead-up races including the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill and the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on Chipping Norton Stakes Day.

Many fillies and mares coming out of the Coolmore Classic field go on to take on the boys over 100m further in April’s lucrative Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick Racecourse.

Coolmore Classic nominations close the Monday before the race followed by the release of the final field of acceptances on the Wednesday.

2017 Coolmore Classic Nominations

Racing NSW took 25 Coolmore Classic 2017 Nominations on Monday March 6 with plenty of depth among the hopeful fillies and mares. Last start Surround Stakes winning New Zealand raider La Bella Diosa is Australian Oaks-bound and in the mix, as is the progressive Chris Waller-trained filly Omei Sword who ran second in the same lead-up. In Her Time chases a fifth straight win and third Group victory on the trot, while Rocket Commander is nominated for a quick back-up after her narrow Group 3 win on a Heavy (10) at Randwick last weekend.

Coolmore Classic Odds & Betting

Coolmore Classic betting is usually led by fillies and mares coming off a top two finish in their most recent Group lead-up.

Peeping (2016) was at juicy Coolmore Classic odds for her Group 1 win

Peeping ($15 in 2016) scored an upset win in the Coolmore Classic as a four-year-old. Photo: Steve Hart.

Only two Coolmore Classic winners finished worse than second in their lead-ups from 2010 – 2016 with Appearance (Wiggle Stakes 4th in 2014) and Peeping (Guy Walter Stakes 3rd in 2016). Coolmore Classic odds favour fillies and mares with proven form up to a mile and the Surround Stakes for three-year-olds held a fortnight before the Group 1 is the most successful recent lead-up race.

The race’s barrier draw doesn’t often impact too heavily on the Coolmore Classic odds with a wide spread of winners from across the gates.

The most successful Coolmore Classic barriers in the past 30 years with four winners each are 2, 7 and 14 which produced back-to-back winners in Typhoon Tracy (2009) and Alverta (2010).

Coolmore Classic Tips

Coolmore Classic tips favour proven Group 3 performers in other fillies-and-mares feature races however the favourites have a poor recent record in the race.

From 2004 – 2016 only two favourites saluted for the punters with the latest to win being Aloha (5/1 in 2011). Looking for fillies coming off a top two finish is a top Coolmore Classic tip and the sole winner in the past 15 years to finish worse than fourth was Eskimo Queen in 2008.

Other Coolmore Classic tips include looking for stand out three-year-olds in the field who have won three times since 2006 and Jim Cassidy-ridden hopefuls as he is the most successful jockey in the race over the past three decades.

2017 Coolmore Classic Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive Coolmore Classic 2017 tips and exotic betting selections will be available here after the field and markets are out so stay tuned for the fillies and mares to get behind this autumn.
