Ladbrokes Tip: Fillies might back-up from the Edward Manifold into the Thousand Guineas the next weekend
The Edward Manifold Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies contested at Flemington Racecourse on Turnbull Stakes Day in early October. One of the earlier Group 1 race meetings of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the card is headlined by the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) for Caulfield Cup types.
The Edward Manifold is one of the key support races at the meeting and is one of three Group 2 events along with the Gilgai Stakes (1200m) and Blazer Stakes (1400m). Offering $200,000 in total prize money the mile clash is run at set weights and fillies often back-up the following Saturday in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse. The last Thousand Guineas winners to come off a run in the Edward Manifold Stakes are Commanding Jewel (3rd in 2012).
The latest edition of the Edward Manifold Stakes ran on Saturday October 7, 2017 .

Edward Manifold Stakes Field
The Edward Manifold Stakes field attracts a line-up of the season’s most promising fillies displaying staying potential. Many of the youngsters in the race are early into their Spring Carnival campaigns and come off a non-Black Type lead-up, while others could have had a previous run in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) in late September.
Fillies often use the race as a lead-up to the following weekend’s Thousand Guineas and in 2015 the Edward Manifold Stakes winner Badawiya ran third in the Group 1 next start, while the 2011 winner Mosheen ran second to Atlantic Jewel in that year’s Thousand Guineas before going on to win the Crown Oaks.
Runners may also be progressing towards a November run in Flemington’s Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. In 2013 the Edward Manifold Stakes third placegetter Solicit ran second in the Ethereal Stakes, third in the Wakeful Stakes and third in that season’s Crown Oaks.
The Edward Manifold Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Sunday with the final field and barrier draw out on the Wednesday of that week.

2017 Edward Manifold Stakes Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive Edward Manifold Stakes betting tips for 2017 will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the best fillies to back this spring.
- 1st: #3 Anchor Bid ($7) – More than happy to take the value and tip this Darren Weir-trained stablemate of the favourite to win. She can be forgiven for the loss as the odds-on favourite in the Kennedy Oaks Trial at the track, and is one of the few in this field proven at Flemington and proven at a mile. She drops back from 1800m and gets the blinkers on so will be hard to hold out looking to win back the love of the punters.
- 2nd: #12 Bring Me Roses ($12) – Nice value Edward Manifold Stakes on offer for this filly prepared by in-form trainer of 3YOs Tony McEvoy. She makes her Melbourne debut after three career starts in Adelaide, the latest seeing her a quarter-length beaten in the Morphettville Guineas (1600m). Gets the mile again and that works in her favour, think she can surprise.
- 3rd: #4 Leather’n’lace ($3.10) – Hard to completely leave out the favourite, also prepared by Weir, who chases win number four on the trot. She is steadily building a nice record and her 1400m win over a similar field of rivals at Caulfield on September 23, which she won by over two lengths, suggests she’ll have no issues at a mile. Bit of an awkward gate, but could just come out and win again.
