Ladbrokes Tip: The new Emirates Stakes is a nice race for Cox Plate graduates in the spring
Previously known as the Mackinnon Stakes, the Group 1 Emirates Stakes underwent a major change-up for the 2016 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The old Emirates Stakes was a mile handicap race run at Flemington Racecourse on the fourth and final meeting of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on the first Saturday in November.
From 2016 onwards, the race still takes place as the namesake event of Emirates Stakes Day or ‘Family Day’ at Victoria’s premier race track on this date, but the conditions and prize money differ. In 2016 the 1600m handicap previously known as the Emirates Stakes moved to Victoria Derby Day, the opening Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting the Saturday prior to Emirates Stakes Day, and is now known as the Kennedy Mile. It replaced the old Mackinnon Stakes, a now defunct name, which became the new Emirates Stakes.
In a bid to attract graduates of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) from late October at Moonee Valley Racecourse, the updated Emirates Stakes takes place over 2000m under weight-for-age conditions. Previously worth $1 million in prize money, from 2016 onwards the race offers a lucrative $2 million in total stakes and now attracts the top tier of both local and international WFA stars. The Emirates Stakes is one of two Group 1 races on the card along with the Darley Classic (1200m) for sprinters.
This year the 2017 Emirates Stakes ran on Saturday November 11, 2017 .

2017 Emirates Stakes Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Emirates Stakes 2017 tips and Group 1 Flemington exotic betting selections will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the end-of-spring stars to back and sack in the $2 million showdown.
- 1st: #7 FOLKSWOOD ($5) – Charlie Appleby-trained Godolphin raider from the UK is third-up down under for the spring and jumps deserving favourite in this. Easily won the Cranbourne Cup over the distance first-up before the brave third to Winx in the race record Cox Plate at The Valley. No Winx, this horse can frank the Cox Plate form with Kerrin McEvoy aboard from the wide alley.
- 2nd: #15 CLIFF’S EDGE ($6) – There’s only been one three-year-old winner of this race in over 30 years, but trainer Darren Weir is giving this in-form colt a go. He drops six kilos from the 57kg he had when second to runaway filly Aloisia in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m). He won the Ladbrokes Classic before that and was saved from a step-up in distance for the Derby for this. Genuine chance.
- 3rd: #3 GAILO CHOP ($7) – Won this race when it was the Mackinnon in 2015 when French trained and is now with Darren Weir and doing well this prep. A Group 1 winner in the Ladbrokes Classic (2000m) two back, that form franked when the runner-up Johannes Vermeer went on to run second in the Melbourne Cup. Also a Cox Plate graduate when fifth.

There are also two previous winners of the old Mackinnon Stakes engaged in the Emirates Stakes 2017 field with Happy Trails (2014) and Gailo Chop (2015) out to become dual winners of the updated race.
