Ladbrokes Tip: Double figure runners have an imposing George Ryder Stakes record over the past decade

The George Ryder Stakes is one of a bumper five Group 1 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival races taking place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in March on Golden Slipper Stakes Day.

Racing at the meeting is top-level and highlighted by the two-year-olds facing off in the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m). Contested over 1500m by the season’s best sprinter – milers, the George Ryder Stakes is one of the key support races on the card and is a weight-for-age contest for horses aged three-years-old and above.

The winner of the Canterbury Stakes run at Randwick a fortnight before is exempt from ballot in the George Ryder Stakes and many runners back up in the  Group 1 $3 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) during Sydney’s The Championships in April.

The last horse to complete the George Ryder Stakes – Doncaster Mile double was Winx (2016). Winx also returned in 2017 to go back-to-back in the George Ryder Stakes results posting her sixteenth win on the trot.

In 2018 Winx secured her 24th straight victory, world record 17th Group 1 flat race victory and an historical third George Ryder Stakes win.

The latest running of the George Ryder Stakes took place on Saturday March 24, 2018 .

George Ryder Stakes Odds & Betting

The George Ryder Stakes betting markets are usually led by those horses coming off top three or four runs in Group 1 company in Sydney over 1400m – 1600m. From 2006 – 2018 only five George Ryder Stakes favourites saluted for the punters with the latest being champion mare Winx (2016 & 2017 & 2018).

Sydney’s premier trainer over the past decade Chris Waller has dominated the George Ryder Stakes with three straight winners from 2010 – 2012 before the three straight wins again with Winx (2016-18); his gallopers always feature highly in the George Ryder Stakes odds.

No George Ryder Stakes winner since Referral (1999) came off a lead-up run worse than fourth and so those dominating the markets are the in-form, proven weight-for-age types with form over the distance.

George Ryder Stakes Field

The George Ryder Stakes field attracted a dozen or more final acceptances every year from 2009 – 2015. For the 2016 and 2017 and 2018 editions the mighty mare Winx scared off a number of horses leading to below capacity editions of the event.

George Ryder Stakes odds were very short on the 2016 winner Winx

Horses come into the George Ryder Stakes field via many different lead-up races with the 2014 and 2015 winners Gordon Lord Byron and Real Impact coming off international runs. The traditional lead-up however is the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) run over 200m shorter at Randwick two weeks before.

The Canterbury Stakes produced two winners from 2011 – 2018 with the Chris Waller-trained duo Rangirangdoo (4th in 2011) and Metal Bender (3rd in 2012).

George Ryder Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race before the final field and barrier draw is announced on the Wednesday.

The official George Ryder Stakes 2018 field and barriers are released on Wednesday March 21, 2018 and will be published in full below.

The 2018 George Ryder Stakes Final Field attracted only six runners. Dual defending champion and the world’s best horse on turf Winx is the one to beat from the outside gate as she looks for win number 24 on the trot. One on her inside in gate five is the “danger”, three-year-old Kementari coming off a Randwick Guineas win over the mile against his own age.

George Ryder Stakes Tips

Gallopers with proven Group 1 form around the distance are the top George Ryder Stakes tips. The favourites – up until the dominance of Winx (2016-18) – had a poor record in recent years and favourite proved a George Ryder Stakes betting tip.

Look for value in the markets by backing a runner who ran in the top three in Group 1 company last time out and that is proven in weight-for-age company.

2018 George Ryder Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider George Ryder Stakes 2018 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the autumn gallopers to back and sack in the weight-for-age feature this season.

  • 1st: #4 WINX ($1.12)
  • 2nd: #1 HAPPY CLAPPER ($14)
  • 3rd: #6 KEMENTARI ($7.50)

WINX ($1.12). What’s left to say? She is going as good as ever as she chases a third George Ryder Stakes win, 24th triumph on the trot and world record Group 1 flat race win No. 17. Hugh Bowman believes she can emulate the over seven length win in this race in the wet from 12 months ago with the same conditions and an even smaller field. Seven length Chipping Norton winner resuming, undefeated on Heavy going and nothing in this race will challenge the world’s best horse on turf. HAPPY CLAPPER ($14) knows what the tailwind of the mighty mare feels like and will be feeling it here, but big hope for second after the nice Cantebury Stakes win fresh and was a half-length second in the Doncaster Mile on Heavy going last autumn. KEMENTARI ($7.50) also has genuine claims here after winning his latest three including the Randwick Guineas in fine style. Heavy track is the unknown but has all the class and heads towards the Doncaster Mile as favourite in that.

George Ryder Stakes Form Guide

Displaying all the information punters need, the George Ryder Stakes form guide is the best place to look before placing a bet on the weight-for-age clash.

Recent George Ryder Stakes form – until Winx saluted for the punters in 2016-18 – reveals the poor record of favourites and the notable fact that many of the race’s winners dropped back in distance from their lead-up run. Looking for horses that ran top four last start is a key George Ryder Stakes form indicator with the last winner to finish worse than fourth before winning the classic being Referral back in 1999.

Fillies and mares also had a poor record against the colts, geldings and stallions in the George Ryder Stakes with no female galloper having won since Heat Of The Moment won in her three-year-old season back in 1986 until Winx (2016-18) broke the drought 30 years later.

Another thing to keep an eye on in the George Ryder Stakes form guide is the barriers with just one winner in the past 15 years having jumped from a double digit gate when Real Impact won from 12 of 14 in 2015.

George Ryder Stakes Form Facts

  • The Chipping Norton Stakes – George Ryder Stakes betting double was last achieved by Winx (2016, 2017 & 2018)
