The Golden Slipper Stakes is the richest race for two-year-olds in not only Australia but the world and highlights the early Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival action at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse each March.
Offering a lucrative $3.5 million in total prize money including $2 million to the Golden Slipper winner, the 1200m sprint for juveniles is run at set weights. Colts and geldings in the Golden Slipper Stakes field carry 56.5kg while the fillies taking on the boys in the classic carry 54.5kg.
There are a bumper five Group 1 races held on Golden Slipper Stakes Day with the meeting’s namesake race supported by the: Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m), Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
Seven earlier lead-up races offer a Golden Slipper Stakes ballot exemption to the winner: Silver Slipper Stakes, Sweet Embrace Stakes, Skyline Stakes, Reisling Stakes, Todman Stakes, Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes.

Golden Slipper Tips
Each autumn Golden Slipper Stakes tips favour horses coming off a first or second in their lead-up run. From 2003 – 2016, eight of the fourteen Golden Slipper Stakes winners came off a win. The last start winners were back on top of the Golden Slipper results again in 2018 when the filly Estijaab did the Reisling Stakes – Golden Slipper double.
The best lead-up races are the Todman Stakes and Reisling Stakes and the winners of these Group 2 events are usually a hot Golden Slipper Stakes tip.
Class traditionally prevails over anything else in the Golden Slipper Stakes tips and results with the season’s best two-year-olds able to overcome a wide barrier draw to win. Two Golden Slipper Stakes winners have won from the outside barrier 16 draw in recent years with Phelan Ready (2009) and Vancouver (16).
Barrier one however has produced more Golden Slipper winners in the past 30 plus years than any other gate with seven victories since 1983 so looking for the rails-drawn runner is a nice tip.

- 1st: #1 WRITTEN BY ($5)
- 2nd: #2 SANTOS ($11)
- 3rd: #10 SUNLIGHT ($4.40)
Intriguing and typically open edition of the Slipper especially with another predicted Heavy track for the two-year-olds to overcome. The only one proven on race day on Heavy going? WRITTEN BY ($5) and we’re sticking with him. Was a dominant Ladbrokes Blue Diamonds winner in late February before travelling to Sydney and proving his ability the other way last Saturday with an on-pace victory in the Pago Pago Stakes in very good time. Gets the draw and hasn’t done a thing to suggest he’s not up to this even on the quick turnaround. SANTOS ($11) is on the drift and now represents good value, the last start Skyline Stakes winner flying this time in and a two-length Randwick trial on Heavy going in the meantime. Gai Waterhouse is after a seventh Slipper and could get it at a price. SUNLIGHT ($4.40) is also easing but Tony McEvoy’s gun filly remains favourite looking to salute for the punters with a sixth win on the trot and third at Rosehill Gardens after she won the Magic Night last weekend. Cannot be left out of anything.
