Ladbrokes Tip: The Lee Steere Stakes is the ideal Railway Stakes lead-up in Perth each summer
The Lee Steere Stakes is a Group 2 race run at Ascot Racecourse on the first Saturday of November during the early stages of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Contested on the same day as Flemington’s Emirates Stakes Day races in Melbourne, the Lee Steere Stakes is one of three Black-Type races in Perth at the meeting and offers $250,000 in total prize money.
Run over 1400m, the weight-for-age clash is the traditional lead-up to the tougher summer races at Morphettville Racecourse over the summer including the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).The last horse to win the Lee Steere Stakes – Railway Stakes double in the same year was Belle Bizarre (2006). More recently Luckygray won the 2012 Lee Steere Stakes between his 2011 and 2013 Railway Stakes victories.
The next edition of the Lee Steere Stakes is scheduled to run on Early November, 2017.

Black Heart Bart went on to run fourth in that year’s Railway Stakes and also later won Morphettville’s The Goodwood the next year under a new trainer.
Another possible lead-up race also run at Ascot Racecourse in late October is the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m). Runners out of the Lee Steere Stakes field also may drop back in distance for Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later and the Lee Steere – Winterbottom double was last achieved by Magnifisio (2014). Magnifisio also ran second to Black Heart Bart in the following year’s Lee Steere Stakes.
