Lexus Stakes Tips

Tips for the Lexus Stakes are dominated by proven stayers and those in-form spring gallopers coming off good lead-up performances in races like the previous weekend’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup and the Geelong Cup, which is another important Melbourne Cup qualifying race.

Tipping international horses to win the Lexus Stakes is also a proven bet with the likes of Oceanographer (2016) winning from overseas.

2017 Lexus Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive Lexus Stakes 2017 tips and selections on what horse will take out the Melbourne Cup ballot exemption will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned.

  • 1st: #4 ALOFT ($5.50) – Lloyd Williams looks for a possible record line-up in the Melbourne Cup field as the five-time winning owner of the ‘Loving Trophy’ chases more success in the ‘Race That Stops A Nation. JRA Trophy third behind stablemate and reigning Melbourne Cup winner Almandin two back at Flemington before the last start flop in Caulfield’s Herbert Power Stakes. Erase that failure, better at Flemington and can atone.
  • 2nd: #10 KELLSTORM ($7.50) – Darren Weir-trained import was only two lengths back third to stablemate Amelie’s Star in The Bart Cummings over this track / distance on October 7. Finished midfield sixth behind Vengeur Masque in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 25, only 1.85 lengths beaten and gets the chance again here on the minimum weight.
  • 3rd: VENGEUR MASQUE ($7) – It’s a typically open Lexus Stakes betting affair this spring and the Geelong Cup winner is as good as any to run in the money, in form and well-weighted. Looks to have improved since The Bart Cummings eighth.

Lexus Stakes Field

The final field for the Group 3 Lexus Stakes is made up of seasoned stayers who are either having their final hit out for the Group 1 $6m Melbourne Cup (3200m) to be run at Flemington the following Tuesday or are seeking to gain automatic entry into Australia’s greatest race. Final acceptances are taken on the Wednesday prior to Saturday’s Derby Day meeting with a maximum of eighteen horses allowed to line up. The Lexus Stakes is run under handicap conditions and the non-apprentice claiming race is open to all horses.
