Lexus Stakes 2016

Saturday 29th October

The $300,000 Lexus Stakes is run over 2500m at Flemington on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in late October or early November on what is traditional called Derby Day. Derby Day is regarded by many as the best days racing of the year with the Group 1 $1.5m Victoria Derby (2500m) the main event on the program that day. The Group 3 Lexus Stakes is the last chance to qualify for the Group 1 $6m Melbourne Cup (3200m) run at Flemington the following Tuesday with the winner of the Lexus Stakes becoming exempt from the ballot for the ‘Race That Stops The Nation’ if it was a first, second and final acceptor. The last horse to win the Lexus Stakes and go on and win the Cup three days later was Shocking in 2009.

This year the Lexus Stakes will be run on Saturday 29th October, 2016.

Lexus Stakes Field

The final field for the Group 3 Lexus Stakes is made up of seasoned stayers who are either having their final hit out for the Group 1 $6m Melbourne Cup (3200m) to be run at Flemington the following Tuesday or are seeking to gain automatic entry into Australia’s greatest race. Final acceptances are taken on the Wednesday prior to Saturday’s Derby Day meeting with a maximum of eighteen horses allowed to line up. The Lexus Stakes is run under Handicap conditions and the non-apprentice claiming race is open to all horses.

Lexus Stakes Betting & Odds

Odds for the Lexus Stakes are displayed shortly after the final field is released on the Wednesday prior to the race but most of the betting is done on the Saturday with the number of bets increasing as it gets closer to start time. The prices on individual horses range from the favourite who would have been winning or running around the placings and could be as short as $3 and range up to $51 to $101 for those horses that have been running near to last than first.

Lexus Stakes Tips

Tips for the Lexus Stakes are closely related to each horse’s form which is reflected in the market order. Punters can work out their own selections by ‘studying the form’ or they may take on board suggestions from the ‘racing experts’ on radio, TV, racing websites and racing magazines and publications. The punter can then decide if he wants to back his selection straight out for a win, each way or part of a quinella or a trifecta or as a leg of a multi bet.

Lexus Stakes Form Guide

Races that may show a good form line heading to the Lexus Stakes are the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m), and the Group 2 The Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) all at Caulfield and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) run at Flemington. The Group 1 The Metropolitan which is run over 2400m at Randwick in Sydney in early October is also a strong lead up race for the Lexus Stakes. Each horse’s form is clearly exposed on a number of websites and in many specialised racing publications that are put into circulation on the Thursday and Friday before the race.

Lexus Stakes Results

The results for the Lexus Stakes are determined shortly after the horses past the winning post and are made official after the jockey of each horse finishing first to fifth ‘weighs in’ in front from of the stewards who give the all clear or ‘correct weight’. Once ‘correct weight’ is announced the on course bookies and tote can pay out on winning tickets as well as the online bookies who will display the final results on their websites. Sometimes the final result is delayed if one of the beaten jockeys fires in an objection or a protest against a runner that has finished in front of him or her and ‘correct weight’ is held up until the stewards make a final decision.
