2017 Melbourne Cup Field & Barrier Draw
The 2017 Melbourne Cup Final Field & Barrier Draw were released on Saturday November 4 and attracted the full 24 Melbourne Cup Horses including Hartnell, third in the Melbourne Cup trifecta last year, carrying the 57.5kg top weight.
The Melbourne Cup 2017 Field also features six Lloyd Williams-owned stayers including the reigning Melbourne Cup winner Almandin in barrier 14 looking to win multiple editions of the race for the first time since the historic three-peat of Makybe Diva (2003-05).Almandin is battling for favouritism in the odds on the Melbourne Cup field for 2017 with one of the 11 international Melbourne Cup horses in the race, Marmelo, coming off the eye-catching Caulfield Cup sixth.
There was an early scratching from the 2017 Melbourne Cup field with Who Shot Thebarman (20) withdrawn from the race on Sunday due to an elevated temperature.
Trainer Chris Waller remains in the mix with Libran (barrier seven), while trainer Darren Weir saddles-up three chances with Humidor (barrier 13), Big Duke (barrier five) and Amelie’s Star (barrier 10).

The Melbourne Cup field features no emergencies so if a horse is scratched after final acceptances than the two-mile showdown will run under capacity. There are plenty of lead-up races offering a chance for runners outside the Melbourne Cup ballot order of 24 to make the field including the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
Betting on the possible horses in the Melbourne Cup field is open nearly all year round, but the Melbourne Cup odds really firm once the final line-up is confirmed. Each year the presence of internationally-trained horses outside of Australia and New Zealand in the Melbourne Cup field is growing and the raiders have a strong record running in the Melbourne Cup trifecta. There are many lead-up races horses can run in leading-up to taking their spot in the Melbourne Cup field including the Geelong Cup.
Before the official Melbourne Cup field is announced there are a number of nomination and entry stages. The original Melbourne Cup nominations close in late August or early September followed by Melbourne Cup weights around a week later. The nominations are followed by first acceptances in early October and second acceptances later that month.

2017 Melbourne Cup Field: As it Took Shape
Below is a list of the likely 2017 Melbourne Cup Horses and confirmed Melbourne Cup Jockeys prior to Victoria Derby Day where a final spot in the field will be offered to the Lexus Stakes winner if eligible.
Note: Gallante (20th) and Qewy (22nd) are assured a start in the Melbourne Cup field, but are unlikely final acceptors. Wall Of Fire (24th), Abbey Marie (25th) and Thomas Hobson (26th) should all make the starting Melbourne Cup horses, depending on the Lexus Stakes Results.
Update: Gallante will line-up in the 2017 Melbourne Cup field as one of a possible seven chances for five-time winning owner Lloyd Williams if there is a wet track.
Update: Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby could back Qewy up in the 2017 Melbourne Cup field after last year’s fourth placegetter set a new track record winning the Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) impressively on Wednesday.
Update: The suspended Regan Bayliss is off the Lindsay Park-trained Ventura Storm with triple Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss picking up the mount.
Update: Zac Purton rides the 2015 Melbourne Cup runner-up Max Dynamite, the horse one of three possible runners for Ireland’s William Mullins should Thomas Hobson (26th on the order of entry) make the line-up. Joao Moreira from Hong Kong rode last year’s runner-up and sweats a 2017 Melbourne Cup ride on Thomas Hobson.
Horse Out: Qwey won’t run in the Melbourne Cup field ruled out of a chance to improve on his fourth last year after pulling up a little sore from the big Bendigo Cup win. Wall Of Fire is now a guaranteed starter in the race for jockey Craig Williams and Abbey Marie moves into no. 24 on the ballot hoping to retain a spot post-Lexus Stakes results on Saturday.
Note: Abbey Marie is the latest horse to be ruled out of a Melbourne Cup run, the mare No. 25 on the order of entry before trainer Mick Kent confirmed they would not be paying final acceptances for the equal Caulfield Cup sixth placegetter. Thomas Hobson now sits No. 24 on the Melbourne Cup ballot and will be the third horse in the race for Irish trainer William Mullins if the Lexus Stakes winner is either Ecuador or Havana Cooler.
2017 Melbourne Cup Second Acceptances
The official Melbourne Cup 2017 Second Acceptances left 36 runners including the defending Melbourne Cup winner Almandin who leads all-in Melbourne Cup betting, gutsy Cox Plate runner-up to Winx last Saturday Humidor who has stormed up the Melbourne Cup odds and 12 internationals led by Marmelo.
