- 1st: #1 BIG DUKE ($2.20) – Master trainer Darren Weir saddles-up the clear favourite who is the one to beat. This consistent and classy stayer was runner-up in The Metropolitan before the big effort under a big weight winning the St. Leger (2600m) in Sydney a fortnight ago. Impressed there and faces a similar line-up of rivals. Will be too strong again, proven at Moonee Valley with Brenton Avdulla retaining the ride in a small field from barrier one.
- 2nd: #7 CISMONTANE ($14) – Was $41 in the St. Leger and was ridden to be run down by Tim Clark. Run down this Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained galloper was, but still held for third. Won’t be found at the same price, but genuine value again drawn better (4) with regular rider Stephen Baster back in the saddle.
- 3rd: #3 AUVRAY ($5) – Happy to stick with the St. Leger form from Randwick to stack-up at The Valley. This Richard Freedman-trained French import has finished top two (including two wins) in his four latest runs. Wasn’t good enough when second to Big Duke and doesn’t get any favours under the SW+P conditions, but is a top three chance again for sure.
Moonee Valley Cup Field
The Moonee Valley Cup field attracts a quality line-up of stayers each season including increasingly a number of international raiders heading towards a run in the world’s richest handicap – the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.
Runners in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup field may come off a run in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at the same track earlier in the month, a race that last produced a winner with The United States (6th) in 2015. Another good lead-up race is the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) a fortnight before at Caulfield a race Bohemian Lily ran third in before her third next-up in the Moonee Valley Cup in 2015.
In 2014 Prince Of Penzance won the Moonee Valley Gold Cup before returning for a second in the race in 2015 that lead to his upset Melbourne Cup victory as a $101 roughie.
The Group 3 VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) on Emirates Stakes Day is the other most popular next-up option for Moonee Valley Gold Cup graduates. In 2014 the MV Cup winner Prince Of Penzance ran second in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes behind Le Roi who improved on a MV Cup second that spring. Third in that year’s Moonee Valley Cup Au Revoir meanwhile won the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) two runs later, a race Prince Of Penzance finished third in. Americain is the other recent Melbourne Cup winner to have also won the Moonee Valley Gold Cup in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
The last galloper to complete the Moonee Valley Cup – Queen Elizabeth Stakes was Precedence in 2013. Precedence also won the 2010 Moonee Valley Gold Cup on the back of a Herbert Power Stakes third and a JRA Cup victory.
Moonee Valley Cup nominations close the Monday prior to the race running that Saturday followed by the release of the final field and barriers on the Wednesday.

Despite the bumper list of early entries the 2017 Moonee Valley Gold Cup Field attracted just seven final acceptors with betting dominated by the rails-drawn Big Duke who is at $2 to secure back-to-back wins following his St. Leger (2600m) win in Sydney last start. The St. Leger runner-up Auvray is in the mix to turn the tables in the Moonee Valley Cup, while Chris Waller has two runners after training the quinella last year including the 2016 runner-up Who Shot Thebarman.
