Ladbrokes Tip: The MV Fillies Classic is a good lead-up to the VRC Oaks over the Melbourne Cup Carnival

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day in late October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Previously known as the Moonee Valley Oaks and run in March during the autumn, since 2013 the event has been part of the spring line-up and makes a nice lead-up run for fillies heading towards the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Cox Plate Day is obviously headlined by the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m), which is the only elite level race on the card. The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is one of four Group 2 support acts along with the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) and the Crystal Mile (1600m). Contested over a mile (1600m) the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a set weights event and offers a total of $200,000 in prize money.

The last filly to win both the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (then the MV Oaks) and the Crown Oaks as a three-year-old was Special Harmony who won the Fillies Classic in 2004 after her 2003 Crown Oaks victory, when the former was contested in the autumn.

The latest edition of the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic ran on Saturday October 28, 2017 .

2017 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Moonee Valley Fillies Classic 2017 betting tips and Cox Plate Day selections will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the fillies to back and sack in the Group 2 showdown.

  • 1st: #2 BANISH ($5.50) – Godolphin-raced Lonhro filly has the outside alley to overcome, but time to do so getting out to a mile for the first time. She’s previously finished ahead of subsequent Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia so has solid form lines and comes off a win against the older mares at Cranbourne on Cup Day. Big chance at a still nice price with C. Williams a plus in the saddle again.
  • 2nd: #3 GLAM GURU ($8.50) – Open field of chances, but fancy this improving daughter of Medaglia D’Oro for a place at the price. She’s in Melbourne for the first time since March where she flopped down the Flemington straight, but should prove to like The Valley circuit. Won back-to-back at home earlier in the season before a genuine last start second over 1800m when only 2.2 lengths beaten (also at Morphettville). Coming back to a mile is a danger out of that Listed Hill Stakes race.
  • 3rd: #8 TOUCH OF MINK ($13) – Bit of an unknown, this Matthew Smith-trained Not A Single Doubt filly looks to have upside chasing her maiden win at start number seven. Has been right in the finish in her last two over 1300m and 1400m respectively in Sydney and out to a mile presents as a chance to break the duck back against her own kind.

Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Field

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic attracts a class field of three-year-old fillies heading towards a run in a race like the Crown Oaks or the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) against the older mares on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse. In 2016 I Am A Star finished third in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Trifecta before beating the mares home in the Myer Classic next start.

Many of the fillies in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field come off a run in Flemington’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) earlier in the month, which last produced a winner with My Poppette (3rd in 2015).

Fillies may also come off a run in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield a fortnight earlier, a race that produced recent Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winners Lumosty (8th) in 2014 and Gypsy Diamond (6th) in 2013. Also in 2013, Gregers ran second in the MV Fillies Classic on the back of a Thousand Guineas third.

Another possible next-up option for the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic graduates on Derby Day is the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m). Moonee Valley Fillies Classic nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday followed by the release of the final field and barriers on the Wednesday.
