Ladbrokes Tip: The PJ O’Shea Stakes is a key lead-up to the Brisbane Cup each winter
The P.J. O’Shea Stakes is a key early feature of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival formerly known as the Eagle Farm Cup (2010-16).
Set to run at the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane in 2018, the PJ O’Shea Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age event contested over 2200m. Offering $200,000 in total prize money, the PJ O’Shea Stakes is held in late May or early June and is accompanied on the race card by the Group 2 Moreton Cup (1200m) for the winter sprinters.
It was previously held on the same day as the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) for the three-year-old fillies but now runs a week later as part of its own feature winter racing meet.
Horses that contest the PJ O’Shea Stakes often head towards a next-up winter run in the Group 2 $300,000 Brisbane Cup (2200m) a week later and the last horse to do the double was Lights Of Heaven (2012).
Most recently the PJ O’Shea Stakes winner in 2017 Single Gaze went on to run second in the Brisbane Cup when both races took place at Doomben Racecourse.
The next edition of the P.J. O’Shea Stakes takes place on Saturday June 1, 2019.
