Ladbrokes Tip: The PJ O’Shea Stakes is a key lead-up to the Brisbane Cup each winter
The P.J. O’Shea Stakes is a key early feature of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival formerly known as the Eagle Farm Cup (2010-16) before its move to Doomben Racecourse to join the Oaks Day line-up.
A Group 2 weight-for-age event contested over 2200m, the P.J. O’Shea Stakes now offers a generous $400,000 in total prize money. The weight-for-age race is held in late May or early June and is accompanied on the race card by the Group 2 Moreton Cup (1200m) for the winter sprinters and the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) for the three-year-old fillies.
Horses that contest the PJ O’Shea Stakes often head towards a next-up winter run in the Group 2 $300,000 Brisbane Cup (2200m) a week later and the last horse to do the double was Lights Of Heaven (2012).
More recently the PJ O’Shea Stakes winner in 2017 Single Gaze went on to run second in the Brisbane Cup when both races took place at Doomben Racecourse. The following year in 2018 it was back-to-back wins for the mares with the success of Egg Tart who came off a lead-up Doomben Cup second.
The latest edition of the P.J. O’Shea Stakes took place on Saturday June 1, 2019 and saw two-time Group 1 winning mare Kenedna salute.

#6 SIXTIES GROOVE – To Win
An open edition of the P.J. O’Shea Stakes this winter but $4 still look attractive odds on the in-form SIXTIES GROOVE coming off back-to-back third placings this prep. A gun barrier two draw for the Kris Lees-trained stayer who has a gun record at the distance (3:2-1-0) and the chance to frank the Doomben Cup form. Needs to turn the tables on the two that beat him home in that Group 1 last time out – KENEDNA (1st) and LIFE LESS ORDINARY (2nd) – but the extra distance will help and he won’t be found at those $21 odds here. Damien Oliver booked for the ride is a big plus.
