Over the years the South Australian Derby form has stacked up in better staying races in Melbourne during the spring including in 2003 when Mummify won the SA Derby – Caulfield Cup double before running third in the following year’s Sydney Cup and the 2005 Caulfield Cup.
Count Chivas (1995) and Shivas Revenge (1991) both won the SA Derby before placing second in the iconic Melbourne Cup in their respective years, while Subzero (1992) completed the double winning that spring’s ‘race that stops a nation’.

- 1st: #7 RUNAWAY ($13)
- 2nd: #2 MONEY MAHER ($20)
- 3rd: #3 LEICESTER ($3.90)
Tipping the upset with proven young stayer RUNAWAY ($13) coming back from a 2800m black-type VRC St Leger win at Flemington on ANZAC Day. Was dominant there making it back-to-back wins and is now up in grade for a shot at the hat-trick. Gai Waterhouse-trained and Stephen Baster stayers on. Will do the distance no worries, just needs to handle this class of rivals. Big odds on offer for the Perth raider MONEY MAHER ($20) who never runs a bad race. Outside of WA for the first time here, but is ultra-consistent and way overs after his lead-up fourth in the Group 2 W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) from April 21. LEICESTER ($3.90) leads betting and is one of four in the race for Darren Weir who has prepared the past two champions. Put the writing on the wall winning the Chariman’s Stakes here a fortnight back and gets the chance to prove himself over more distance and do the double for the second time in three years.
