Ladbrokes Tip: The Stocks Stakes is a good betting guide for the Myer Classic during the spring

The W.H. Stocks Stakes is a Group 2 race for mares contested on Moir Stakes Night at Moonee Valley on a Friday evening in late September or early October during the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Racing at the meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) for sprinters, while the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) for Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas types and the Stocks Stakes are the major support races.

Offering $200,000 in total prize money the Stocks Stakes is run over 1600m under weight-for-age conditions and makes a nice lead-up to other mares-only races in the spring including Flemington’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Victoria Derby Day.

The latest edition of the Stocks Stakes took place on Friday September 29, 2017 .

Stocks Stakes Betting & Odds

Stocks Stakes odds are led by in-form mares with form against similar company with proven ability at weight-for-age and over the mile. Runners that have winning form at the distance and previous experience at the tight Moonee Valley circuit also sit high up the Stocks Stakes odds.

Betting also favours graduates of earlier Melbourne lead-up runs for the mares like Caulfield’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) and the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington a fortnight before the race.

Stocks Stakes Field

The Stocks Stakes field attracts a quality field of weight-for-age mares with ability over the mile.

Many come into the race on the back of a lead-up run earlier in the spring in something like the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, which produced the 2015 Stocks Stakes winner Fenway (9th) and the 2017 champion I Am A Star (7th). Fenway also went on to run second in the Myer Classic two runs later. The next year saw Don’t Doubt Mamma (2016) complete the Let’s Elope Stakes – Stocks Stakes double. The Let’s Elope Stakes also produced the 2015 runner-up May’s Dream (3rd) who finished fourth in the Myer Classic. In 2014 the Let’s Elope Stakes runner-up Dear Demi won the Stocks Stakes next start, while the winner of the former Commanding Jewel ran third in the race next start.

2017 Stocks Stakes Nominations

The WH Stocks Stakes Nominations for 2017 close on the Monday leading-up to Moir Stakes Night and will be listed below once out.

Stocks Stakes Tips

Good WH Stocks Stakes betting tips to take in the spring include looking at mares with ability at the track and distance, previous Group winners, past winners over the mile distance and those coming off lead-up runs in the Let’s Elope Stakes.

Single figure hopefuls have a dominant recent record in the race so another useful tip is to pick a runner in the top half of the markets. Any mares coming down in class off an earlier Group 1 spring race also make for a nice Stocks Stakes winning tip.

2017 Stocks Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider WH Stocks Stakes tips and Moonee Valley Group 2 betting selections will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the mares to get behind in the race this spring.

  • 1st: #3 Lizzie L’Amour ($7.50) – Hugh Bowman aboard from barrier one has this Kiwi visitor being kept safe in betting second-up after her failed Dato’ run behind gun stablemate Bonneval here on September 9. She walked home with health issues, but has made a recovery and is out to atone. Group 1 winner at home over 2000m and has the class to beat a field of fellow mares.
  • 2nd #11 Smart As You Think ($12) – This well-bred four-year-old is a daughter of dual Cox Plate winner So You Think and should be nearing peak fitness three runs in. Both leads-ups she has jumped at huge odds and is value again at double-figures. Lead-up Let’s Elope fifth was close (2.55 lengths beaten) and the mile will suit better. Has winning form up to 2040m (like her sire) and even from the wider barrier looks a winning chance.
  • 3rd: #7 I Am A Star ($3.40) – Jumps favourite with money coming in for Shane Nichols’ reigning Myer Classic winner to return to her best getting out over a mile, which she has a great record over (5-2-1-1). Wasn’t far off the winner in the Let’s Elope finishing three lengths seventh under 59kg and is better suited with 56.5kg here at WFA.
