Thousand Guineas Tips

Thousand Guineas tips feature the season’s top fillies that have good earlier spring form. The traditional lead-up races into the Group 1 include the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude that produced Amicus (2014) who ran second in the lead-up with the double last achieved by Irish Lights (2009) and the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes that four Thousand Guineas winners have come via since 2006.

Other good Thousand Guineas betting tips include looking for fillies drawn in single-digit barriers with the last filly to salute from wider than barrier nine being Serious Speed (10 of 14 in 2007).

2017 Thousand Guineas Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Thousand Guineas 2017 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the fillies to back and sack in the mile showdown this spring.

1st: #3 BOOKER ($7) – There are just eight fillies in the race this year making for an open affair and think the Prelude form might be the one to follow into the Group 1 this year. Booker didn’t have all that much to spare on the line over 1400m here a fortnight ago leading to a few queries about the mile, but think the pace up front will see her a hard to beat leader.

2nd: #2 ALIZEE ($2.20) – Clear favourite in Thousand Guineas betting after this James Cummings-trained Sepoy filly impressed in Sydney with the comprehensive Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) win. Global Glamour (2016) did the same interstate double last spring and money says Alizee can be the next, and she might just do it too.

3rd: #5 ALOISIA ($10) – Big Each Way chance at double-figures is the rails-drawn Aloisia who was runner-up in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) over the mile as a two-year-old before running on well for an unplaced Caulfield effort last time out.  Fitter second-up, eats up the extra distance and has form around Leather’n’lace who also runs in this.

Thousand Guineas Field

The Thousand Guineas field attracts a line-up of the season’s best three-year-old fillies each season, the majority of which come off a traditional lead-up run a fortnight earlier in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m). The Thousand Guineas Prelude – Thousand Guineas double hasn’t been achieved since Irish Lights (2009), but a subsequent two Thousand Guineas winners came off a Prelude run with Amicus (2nd in 2014) and Stay With Me (6th in 2015).

Other good lead-up races for fillies heading into the Thousand Guineas field include the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) run at Flemington the Saturday prior, and Sydney’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) that Global Glamour (2016) won on way to her Thousand Guineas success. The Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas interstate mile double was also recently completed by Guelph (2013).

The Thousand Guineas field is narrowed down from early August when early nominations are taken via the first acceptances in early September, second acceptances at the end of that month and finally the closing acceptances on the Tuesday of race week.

2017 Thousand Guineas Field

The official Thousand Guineas 2017 Final Field & Barriers will be released by Racing Victoria on the Tuesday leading-up to Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day and published in full below so stay tuned to see what gun young fillies making the starting line-up in the half-a-million-dollar feature.

The 2017 Thousand Guineas Field drew its smallest number of final acceptors in over three decades with just eight hopeful fillies to line-up led by last start Flight Stakes winner Alizee in barrier two. The Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Booker is also in the mix, but drew the far outside barrier (8 of 8). Catchy bypasses the Thousand Guineas 2017 Field in favour of a run against the boys in the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas field for four-times the prize money.

Thousand Guineas Form Guide

The Thousand Guineas form guide features all the info punters need to place a well-informed wager on the mile showdown including the saddlecloth number, barrier, trainer and jockey of all the fillies in the field. Looking for a runner drawn between barriers 4 – 6 is a good tip as these gates have produced the most winners in recent years, while just one winner has jumped from double digits in the past decade with Serious Speed (10 in 2007). Since 2008 four last start winners have gone on to win the Thousand Guineas including Guelph (2013) who took out the Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas double, subsequently completed by Global Glamour (2016). Before her the last Thousand Guineas champ to come via the other Group 1 was Yosei (2010) who ran sixth in the Flight Stakes before winning the Thousand Guineas as a 10/1 chance.

Thousand Guineas Form Facts

  • Serious Speed (2007) was the last winner to jump from a double-digit Thousand Guineas barrier
  • From 2008 – 2017 four favourites in Thousand Guineas betting have saluted for the punters
  • In that time three Thousand Guineas winners started at double-figures with Yosei ($11 in 2010), Commanding Jewel ($10 in 2012) and Aloisia ($14 in 2017)
