Tristarc Stakes 2017

Ladbrokes Tip: The Tristarc Stakes is a traditional Myer Classic lead-up in the spring

The Tristarc Stakes is a Group 2 support race on the Caulfield Cup Day card at Caulfield Racecourse in mid-late October each Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) and along with the Tristarc Stakes the other Group 2 feature on the program is the Caulfield Sprint (1000m). Run over 1400m under set weights plus penalties, the Tristarc Stakes is open only to mares aged four-years-old and above and offers $200,000 in total prize money.

The Tristarc Stakes makes a nice lead-up into the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The last mare to complete the Tristarc Stakes – Myer Classic double was Red Tracer (2013).

The latest edition of the Tristarc Stakes ran on Saturday October 21, 2017 .

Tristarc Stakes Odds & Betting

Tristarc Stakes odds are led each season by quality mares with proven Melbourne form, ability over 1400m – 1600m and those coming off a run in a lead-up race like the Blazer Stakes.

Upsets are not uncommon however and recent winners to jump at double-figures in Tristarc Stakes betting include La Passe ($26 in 2015) and Streama ($10 in 2012).

2017 Tristarc Stakes Betting

The season’s latest Tristarc Stakes 2017 odds and links to our Tristarc Stakes betting markets will be available below the week of the race so stay tuned for the best prices on the Myer Classic-bound mares this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Tristarc Stakes Tips

Good Tristarc Stakes tips include looking for a mare coming off a top three run in Group company, runners with winning form over the distance and Group 1 performers.

The favourites only have a fair strike rate in the race so looking further down the markets for a mare that ran well last time out at double figures is also a nice Tristarc Stakes betting tip to consider.

2017 Tristarc Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Tristarc Stakes 2017 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the mares to back and sack in the Caulfield Cup Day support act this season.

  • 1st: #1 FOXPLAY ($4.60) – Chris Waller-trained favourite in Melbourne for the first time since the 2016 Thousand Guineas fourth. She’s a Sydney Group 1 winner since and fourth-up on Saturday will be hitting peak fitness. Two runs behind Winx led to the Epsom Handicap fourth last start and she was finishing off well. Back against fellow mares here and 200m in distance. If it’s not too sharp and the Melbourne way is a non-issue, she’s a tough-to-beat favourite from the gate (4).
  • 2nd: #13 SHILLELAGH ($10) – Love a Waller roughie to run a place behind a better fancied stablemate and that’s exactly what we get here. Her lead-up seventh (carrying 58.5kg and under three lengths beaten) in Sydney was okay, but she is a second-up specialist (4-3-0-0). Previous Caulfield winner, right distance, down in weight and has Brazilian Joao Moreira aboard. Plenty of boxes ticked as a firming double-figure chance.
  • 3rd: #3 SILENT SEDITION ($7) – Still being kept safe in betting, but on the drift. She has the outside barrier to overcome in a big field and the Andrew Noblet-trained is out to improve on the first-up fifth in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight. Another that flies second-up (4-2-1-1), Caulfield is better with the bend (5-1-3-1) and the step-up to 1400m (4-2-0-2) has the William Reid Stakes winner right in the mix.

Tristarc Stakes Field

The Tristarc Stakes field attracts a collection of the season’s top middle-distance mares many eyeing a Group 1 Myer Classic run over the mile on Derby Day a fortnight later.

The traditional lead-up into the Tristarc Stakes field is Flemington’s Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) run over the same distance two weeks earlier. La Passe (2015) was the last mare to complete the Blazer Stakes – Tristarc Stakes double. That same year Jessy Belle ran third in both races.

Many mares coming out of the Tristarc Stakes field go on to run in the Myer Classic. In 2014 Sweet Idea won the Group 2 before a second to Bonaria in the Myer Classic next start. That same year Catkins ran third in both races. Tristarc Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday followed by the final acceptances and barriers released on the Wednesday.

2017 Tristarc Stakes Field

The official Tristarc Stakes 2017 Final Field & Barriers will be released on the Wednesday of race week and detailed in full below so stay tuned to see what mares line-up in the capacity 16-starter Tristarc Stakes field.

The 2017 Tristarc Stakes Field has drawn a capacity 16 starters plus two emergencies awaiting a run. Foxplay drew ideally in barrier four, Chris Waller’s Group 1 winner in Sydney coming of a lead-up Epsom Handicap fourth over the Randwick mile and should find this an easier assignment. Silent Sedition suffered an early blow coming up with the outside Tristarc Stakes barrier draw, while the in-form Savanna Amour chasing a third win on the trot also has work to do from a double-digit gate.
