Toorak Handicap Winners: Past & Results History

The Toorak Handicap is a must-see Group 1 handicap race in Melbourne, and we look at the past results and history of the time-honoured race on Caulfield Guineas Day.

Some of Australia’s best thoroughbreds have won the Toorak Handicap, so we’re excited to see which champion will win this year.

Recent Toorak Handicap Winners

The Toorak Handicap has built a reputation as one of the most intriguing betting races on the Australian calendar. Over the past two decades, the Group 1 feature has produced a combination of expected winners and surprise results, with names such as Antino, King Mufhasa, More Joyous, Mr Quickie, and Trust in a Gust among the notable winners. The handicap format can make the race particularly unpredictable, creating plenty of opportunities for an upset and keeping punters coming back each year.

Here are the last 20 Toorak Handicap winners:

  • 2025 – Transatlantic
  • 2024 – Antino
  • 2023 – Attrition
  • 2022 – Tuvalu
  • 2021 – I’m Thunderstruck
  • 2020 – Mr Quickie

  • 2018 – Land of Plenty

  • 2012 – Solzhenitsyn
  • 2011 – King Mufhasa
  • 2010 – More Joyous
  • 2009 – Allez Wonder
  • 2008 – Alamosa
  • 2007 – Divine Madonna
  • 2006 – Red Dazzler
  • 2005 – Barely a Moment

Like many Group 1 handicaps, the Toorak Handicap has a strong mix of proven stars and value winners, making it a race punters are always keen to assess. While not every winner from the past 20 years has been a household name, each has had the class to take advantage of the conditions.

Antino, I’m Thunderstruck, and More Joyous are among the standout winners, having consistently competed at the highest level. But the Toorak can also reward punters looking beyond the obvious selections, with horses such as Attrition, Allez Wonder and Tuvalu showing how the handicap conditions can help create an upset.

For punters, that makes assessing the weights and finding a well-handicapped runner a crucial part of the form.

Notable Toorak Handicap Winners

The 1960s and 70s were a golden era for the Toorak Handicap, with champions such as Galilee, Tobin Breeze, Gunsynd, and Leilani featuring among the winners. It was also an era when quality thoroughbreds were far more accustomed to carrying big weights, adding another layer to the betting challenge.

One of the biggest appeals of the Toorak Handicap for punters is that the obvious class runner doesn’t always get the job done. That makes the race less predictable than some Group 1 features and creates plenty of opportunities for bettors willing to look beyond the favourites.

The race also enjoyed a strong period around the turn of the century, with Show a Heart, Roman Arch, and Umrum among the notable winners. Umrum was particularly impressive, going back-to-back in 1999 and 2000.

Toorak Handicap History

First run in 1886, the 1600m Group 1 has undergone a few name changes over the years before settling on the Toorak Handicap in 1990. Despite its long history, it remains one of the key races on the Australian spring racing calendar.

The Toorak has also proved a useful form guide for the Caulfield Cup, with five horses completing the coveted double. Galilee, Tobin Breeze, and Leilani are among those to achieve the feat, although punters have had to wait since 1974 for the most recent Toorak-Caulfield Cup double.

Run on the opening day of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, the Toorak shares the spotlight with the Caulfield Guineas and Might And Power Stakes, making it a major meeting at Caulfield. The race attracts some of the best middle-distance handicappers from Australia and New Zealand, with a $1 million prize pool ensuring plenty of quality in the field.
