The NRL Grand Final is the premier Rugby League match held in Australia each year and pits the season’s best two teams against each other in the Premiership decider.
Traditionally taking place on the first Sunday in October, the NRL Premiership Grand Final was moved to the last Sunday of September for the 2018 NRL Premiership due to a decreased Regular Season of just 25 weeks. From 2019 onwards the NRL Grand Final again features the final two premiership contenders going head-to-head on the first Sunday in October.
From 2023 the NRL Finals and Grand Final will take place after an expanded 27-round regular season accommodating for the now 17 NRL teams with the addition of the Redcliffe Dolphins.
The Grand Final NRL game previously out in Sydney at ANZ Stadium, before a move to Accor Stadium in 2022*, which had been the game’s home since 1999. To determine the two NRL Grand Final teams the NRL Finals play out over the three weeks leading up to the clash, which attracts more betting than any other game of the season.
*In 2021 the NRL Grand Final took place at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane due to COVID-19 restrictions in Sydney.
As well as bragging rights the Grand Final winners are awarded the Provan-Summons Trophy, which is the NRL’s major prize and the design of which replicates the Winfield Cup trophy.
Every player in the winning NRL Grand Final team are also awarded Premiership Rings, while the standout player of the Premiership decider is awarded the Clive Churchill man-of-the-match medal named in honour of the former champion Australian fullback.
The NRL Grand Final draws some of the largest audiences of any sporting event in Australia with an average attendance of 80,000 and a record match attendance of 102,999 achieved in it’s opening year at ANZ Stadium in 1999.

The 2024 NRL Premiership winning club was decided in a Grand Final for the ages with the Penrith Panthers dynasty continuing as they ground down the Melbourne Storm to salute in a tense 14-6 victory to take out their fourth straight Premiership title and sixth overall.
The season’s two best teams both came off blowout Preliminary wins but the decider was anything but a points fest as the Panthers’ discipline, game plan, and defence won the night in a low scoring but high-octane grind.
The Panthers went to another level late to knock off a tiring Storm outfit 14-6 for a record 12th consecutive Finals triumph and fourth straight Grand Final victory.
Penrith improved on their error-riddled Preliminary win over the Sharks, remaining calm after the Storm were first over, to eventually work their way back and salute.
They stuck to the plan and played every advantage to atone for their 2020 GF loss to the Storm and further cement their spot in the Rugby League history books.
The Clive Churchill Medal was awarded to second-row forward Liam Martin who scored the second of the Panthers’ three tries in the 38th minute to give his club the confidence and advantage going into halftime.

The Provan-Summons Trophy is awarded to the winner of the NRL Grand Final.
NRL Grand Final Results
Since the inception of the NRL competition in its current format, the Melbourne Storm had won more Grand Finals than any other club.
Of their six Premiership wins however only four officially remain on the record – 1999, 2012, 2017 and most recently 2020 – with their 2007 and 2009 Premierships stripped due to the club’s salary cap breaches.
The Penrith Panthers hold the official NRL Grand Final winning record since 1998 with six wins including an historical fourthstraight in 2021, 2022, 2023 and most recently their 14-6 victory over the Melbourne Storm in the 2024 NRL Grand Final.
Other multiple NRL Grand Final winners are the Sydney Roosters (2002, 2013, 2018, 2019); Brisbane Broncos (1998, 2000, 2006); and the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles (2008, 2011).
