The Angst Stakes is a Group 3 race for mares run and won at Royal Randwick in mid-October on The Everest Day each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The race is contested over a mile, was first held in 1994, gained Group 3 status in 2013 and currently offers $250,000 in prize money.

The Angst Stakes is named in honour of the ill-fated filly Angst who won the  Silver Shadow Stakes, Furious Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes and the Flight Stakes in 1993 before passing away during larynx surgery later that year as a three-year-old.

The Angst Stakes is held on the same day as the $20 million The Everest slot race, which is the world’s richest race run on turf.

Other key events on the card include the Group 1 $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) which was formerly known as the George Main Stakes, the $2 million The Kosciuszko (1200m) slot race for country-trained horses, four-year-old Golden Eagle hopefuls facing off in the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m), and the Group 3 $2 million Sydney Stakes for sprinters that failed to first gain a start in The Everest field.

The Angst Stakes serves as a potential lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The latest edition of the Angst Stakes ran on Saturday October 14, 2023 as part of Randwick’s The Everest Day race card and saw the Bjorn Baker-trained Renaissance Woman ($6) come with a great late run to win.
