Run at set weights plus penalties over 1600m, the mile feature has no sex or class restrictions and is open to gallopers aged three-years-old and above.
It was previously held on the same day as the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) but was recently moved to run a week earlier than ‘Super Saturday’ on the Australian Guineas Day card.
Fifty Stars (2020), who also won the 2019 Blamey, is the last galloper to complete the Blamey Stakes – Australian Cup double.
Australian Guineas Day also features the lucrative $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) for three-year-old graduates.
The race offers $300,000 in prize money with the Blamey Stakes winner taking out $180,000 for connections, and the Blamey Stakes Day card runs on the same day as the Chipping Norton Stakes Day in Sydney.
The Blamey Stakes winner is now also guaranteed a start in the The All-Star Mile race in mid-March and in 2021 the Blamey winner Star Of The Seas ran a next-up sixth in the event. In 2022 Zaaki improved on a Blamey Stakes second to win that year’s All-Star Mile next start.

Blamey Stakes Betting
Blamey Stakes betting markets are traditionally led by gallopers with proven form over the mile.
Horses stepping back from a Group 1 run in the Futurity Stakes are also usually popular in Blamey Stakes odds, as are those with previous winning experience at Flemington racecourse. The Futurity Stakes last produced a Blamey Stakes winner with Humidor (4th) in 2018.
Single figure hopes have a solid recent record in the race as do those that contested past editions of the event.
There was a notable upset in 2023 with Nonconformist winning the event first-up at Blamey Stakes odds of $19.
Atishu ($4 in 2024) was the last favourite in Blamey Stakes betting to win.

The Blamey Stakes race field has a capacity of 16 runners plus four emergencies.
Milers come off a variety of different lead-up runs, but a drop down from Group 1 class in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield the previous month is a popular one.
In 2014 Lidari ran seventh in the Futurity Stakes before winning the Blamey Stakes, while the following year Suavito won the Futurity Stakes – Blamey Stakes double. Suavito also won the following year’s Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m). The 2017 Blamey Stakes winner Palentino also came off a Futurity run improving on his sixth in the lead-up, as did the 2018 champ Humidor whose Futurity lead-up was a fourth-place effort fresh.
In 2013 the Futurity Stakes also produced the Blamey Stakes winner with Whobegotyou improving on his third in the Group 1.
More recently, dual Blamey Stakes winner Fifty Stars came off a lead-up CF Orr Stakes run for both his victories running 11th in 2019 and 4th in 2020. He also returned to run second to Star Of The Seas when attempting a third straight win in the 2021 Blamey Stakes results.
In 2024 Atishu improved on her lead-up eighth fresh in the CF Orr to win the Blamey Stakes.
Blamey Stakes nominations are taken the Monday before the race with the final field of acceptances and barrier draw released on the Wednesday.

Blamey Stakes Tips
The best Blamey Stakes tips are to look for a single-figure chance with form over a mile coming out of a solid and or luckless Futurity Stakes run at Caulfield in tougher company the start before.
Favourites have a hit-and-miss record so laying the favourite if another better priced runner ticks a number of boxes is another good Blamey Stakes betting tip.

2025 Blamey Stakes Tips

- To Win: #7 Steparty ($4.80 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Steparty is the attractive favourite in Blamey Stakes betting at headquarters for Saturday and still at a nice price to break a notable winning drought. Paul Preusker’s perennial placegetter has finished second or third in his six most recent assignments but looks very well placed here to finally get back in winning form. The consistent Artie Schiller four-year-old brings in some solid form lines from the spring and summer including a Group 1 Sir Rupert third at Caulfield last November. He’s been up for some time but goes best with plenty of racing. Runner-up in Moonee Valley’s Group 2 Australia Stakes in January, he was a well-beaten third but in a crack Group 1 field in the CF Orr behind Another Wil last time out. Benefits back in grade now, and that form was franked with the runner-up Mr B going on to salute in the Futurity. Proven at Flemignton (4:2-0-1) and he’ll see out the mile. Can salute.
Blamey Stakes Form Guide
The Blamey Stakes form guide has all of the need-to-know information on the horses in the field including jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up form.
The best form to follow into the race is the Futurity Stakes run the previous month over 200m shorter, which has produced more Blamey Stakes winners than any other race most recently Humidor (4th in 2018).
The Blamey Stakes form often goes on to hold up in better races throughout the year including in 2022 when the runner-up Zaaki won the All-Star Mile next start before a host of Group 1 placings and eventually a successful title defence that spring back at Flemington in the Group 1 VRC Champions Stakes (2000m).
The 2024 Blamey Stakes form was franked with the winner Atishu going on to run third next-up in the Australian Cup before a second in Sydney’s Queen Of The Turf Stakes. She also returned in the spring to win the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day.
