First held in 1982 and holding Group 3 status since 1986, the event was previously run on the same day as the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) before the Orr was moved to November in 2025, but it remains one of the key support acts on the new-look Rubiton Stakes Day card along with the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies).

Offering $350,000 in prize money, the 1100m sprint is run at set weights and serves as the major final lead-up for juveniles targeting the Group 1 $2 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back at the track a fortnight later.

Four youngsters have completed the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) – Blue Diamond Stakes double throughout history with Rancher (1982), Bel Esprit (2002), Sepoy (2011), and most recently Written By (2018).

More recently the 2020 Blue Diamond Prelude winner Hanseatic improved off a lead-up win in the Blue Diamond Preview and went on to run second in that year’s Blue Diamond Stakes results.

In 2022 the Blue Diamond Stakes was won by the third placegetter in the Colts & Geldings Prelude, Daumier.

In 2025 the Blue Diamond Prelude runner-up Devil Night went on to score an upset Blue Diamond Stakes win at double-figures at his next start.

Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) Betting

Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Prelude betting markets open after the final acceptances are out on the Wednesday before the race runs at Caulfield, the opening Group 1 race meeting of the Melbourne Festival of Racing each autumn.

The two-year-olds that ran well in the Blue Diamond Preview the month before over 100m less in Melbourne usually dominated the Blue Diamond Prelude odds. The Blue Diamond Preview – Prelude double for colts and geldings has recently been achieved by I Am Immortal (2019), Hanseatic (2020), and General Beau (2021).

The results of the Prelude always have an impact on the upcoming Blue Diamond Stakes odds as well and the double is a popular one with punters each year.

The Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Prelude race field attracts the best young male sprinters getting about for the season.

The majority of the two-year-olds in the mix are looking to back-up two weeks later in the Blue Diamond Stakes over 100m further, and most come off an earlier autumn run in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) in late January.

If not the Blue Diamond Preview, the colts and geldings lining-up in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) field are first-up for the autumn or could even be on debut.

Barber (2023), who won the spring’s $1 million Golden Gift in Sydney, the Team Snowden-trained Bodyguard (2024) and the Danny O’Brien-trained debutant Closer To Free (2026) are the latest first-up Blue Diamond Prelude winners.

The Blue Diamond Prelude nominations are taken the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday with the final field and barrier draw out on the Wednesday.

He also ran second in Sydney’s iconic Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes and won the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) that autumn. He returned in the spring headlined and was dominant, including winning the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over a mile and finishing a devastatingly close photo-finish second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley.

The 2022 Blue Diamond Prelude form was franked with Daumier improving on a third to win the Blue Diamond Stakes next-up before finishing fourth behind star filly Fireburn in both the Golden Slipper and Inglis Sires’ that year.

The 2023 Blue Diamond winner, Little Brose, came via a lead-up second in that year’s Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) as did Devil Night in 2025.
