Ladbrokes Tip: The Caloundra Cup makes a nice final lead-up into the Grafton Cup.
The Caloundra Cup is held at the tail-end of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival the Saturday after Brisbane’s Tattersall’s Tiara Day and takes place at the Corbould Park Racecourse at Caloundra in late June or early July.
A quality handicap race contested over 2400m, the race has been run and won since 1985 and won by a number of nice stayers over the years including Henderson Bay (2001), dual champion Empyreal (2005, 2006) and Index Linked (2015).
The Caloundra Cup currently offers a total of $175,000 in prize money and attracts a strong line-up of winter stayers each year. It takes place on the same day as the Group 3 Winx Guineas (1600m) for three-year-olds.
A good lead-up race is the Listed Ipswich Cup run the week prior or Brisbane’s Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup contested on Tiara Day.
The Caloundra Cup winner is also exempt from ballot for the following Thursday’s $200,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) and Supply And Demand (2017) was the last horse to do the Caloundra Cup – Grafton Cup winter double.
The latest edition of the Caloundra Cup ran on Sunday July 11th, 2021 after being postponed eight days following the original abandoned meeting, and was won by the odds-on favourite Stockman.

- To Win: #2 Happy Go Plucky ($8.50 at time of publish)
The bookies are tipping the Sydney form to hold, but happy to go with the Queensland form and give the evergreen veteran Happy Go Plucky the chance at back-to-back Cup wins off his good effort at Ipswich. Was at big odds that day and has a few things against him (going up in weight, distance and yet to place at the track), but he and his hoop are in good form and this is an open and winnable edition of the Caloundra Cup.
