The Caulfield Cup is one of the most popular and time-honoured horse races in Australia. The 2400m staying race has been won by many local and international champions, often on the road to the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November.

Past Caulfield Cup winners include Verry Elleegant, Mongolian Khan, Northerly, and Might and Power. It takes an outstanding stayer to win, but because of the size of the field, there is always room for an upset result.

We look at the most recent Caulfield Cup winners, which are an excellent betting guide for the upcoming race. They detail betting trends, race patterns, and the best jockeys and trainers to follow for the Caulfield feature in October.

2025 Caulfield Cup Results

The Caulfield Cup 2025 was run on Saturday, October 18, with race favourite Half Yours scoring for Tony & Calvin McEvoy.

1st: No. 15 Half Yours
2nd: No. 13 River of Stars
3rd: No 17 Valiant King
4th: Prestige Nocturne

Half Yours justified favouritism ($2.50) with a classy Caulfield Cup win. Jamie Melham showed her riding abilities when getting him into a relaxed rhythm before peeling out around the home turn and showcasing a good turn-of-foot.

The victory saw his odds for the Melbourne Cup shorten, as he looks to become the first Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double winner since Without a Fight in 2023.

Famous Caulfield Cup Winners

The Caulfield Cup has a rich history of famous winners, including short-priced favourites and massive upsets. It’s what makes it a great race on the Australian racing calendar, and we have three of the most memorable Cup winners.

Might and Power – 1997

A true Australian champion, Might and Power defied them all when winning in 1997. The front-running style of the great Might and Power made him a must-see thoroughbred, and when it comes to Caulfield Cup results, they don’t get much more popular. The win was backed up in the Melbourne Cup, making him one of a handful of horses to complete the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double.

Verry Elleegant – 2020

There was a lot of hype around the Kiwi runner, who was in brilliant form leading into the 2020 Caulfield Cup. The champion mare won the Winx Stakes and Turnbull Stakes during her spring campaign before proving too good at Caulfield.

She became the third favourite ($5) to win since 2007 when holding off international raider Anthony Van Dyck and fellow Kiwi runner The Chosen One. The narrow winning margin made for a thrilling finish, and the first eight runners home were bred outside of Australia.

Verry Elleegant defeated one of the more even Caulfield Cup races in recent history, and she will always be one of the best to win.

Viewed – 2009

It’s almost impossible to leave a Bart Cummings-trained runner off the list. We’re choosing Viewed, who was his last Caulfield Cup winner, and also one of the most unlikely. He paid $41 with bookmakers, with Brad Rawiller being the successful Caulfield Cup jockey.

Not many thought Cummings could get Viewed to win, considering he carried the top weight, and his form leading into the race wasn’t flash, despite winning the 2008 Melbourne Cup. He settled at the rear of the field before coming with a searching run, downing stablemate Roman Emperor.

He’s one of the best roughie winners, and with Cummings being the most successful trainer, it was a fitting way to end his Caulfield Cup domination.

Caulfield Cup & Melbourne Cup Double Winners

The Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double is one of the best feats in horse racing, and 11 supreme thoroughbreds have achieved it. Without a Fight is the most recent Cups double winner, scoring in 2023. The list is packed with some of the biggest names in world racing, including Let’s Elope, Galilee, Might and Power, and Rising Fast.

  • Without a Fight (2023)
  • Ethereal (2001)
  • Might and Power (1997)
  • Doriemus (1995)
  • Gurner’s Lane (1982)
  • Galilee (1966)
  • Even Stevens (1962)
  • Rising Fast (1954)
  • Rivette (1939)
  • The Trump (1937)
  • Poseidon (1906)

Betting on the Caulfield Cup

Betting on the Caulfield Cup is popular among horse racing fans, and Caulfield Cup winners typically pay generous odds from bookmakers. Of the last 17 winners, the shortest odds for a winner were $2.30 for Incentivise, which justified its favouritism with a stellar win, followed closely by Half Yours in 2025 who paid $2.50 as the top fancy in the markets.

Five of the last seven winners have paid single-figure odds, with Durston and Duke De Sessa bucking the trend. However, there have been some well-priced winners recently, including Boom Time ($51) and Dunaden ($11).

It’s best to find runners around the $10 mark that have performed well in the lead-up races. The races to keep an eye on are the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington, the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield, and the Herbert Power at Caulfield.
