The Concorde Stakes is a popular Group 2 short-distance sprint, upgraded ahead of the 2026 edition, contested at Royal Randwick on Chelmsford Stakes Day in early September each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The set weights plus penalties showdown now offers $1 million in prize money having had a major boost ahead of the 2023 edition, and it has been run and won since 1990.

The Concorde Stakes now serves as a potential lead-up into the world’s richest turf race, the Group 1 $20 million The Everest (1200m) taking place at the same track in October.  In 2017 and 2018 the champion Redzel completed the Concorde Stakes – The Everest double twice on the trot and returned in 2019 to become a three-time Concorde Stakes hero.

In 2020 the Concorde Stakes winner Gytrash ran a next-up third in that year’s The Everest results before taking out Rosehill’s Winners Stakes – race renamed after the previous season’s The Everest winner each year. The 2021 Concorde Stakes winner Nature Strip finally saluted as the odds-on favourite in the event at his third attempt before going on to win that year’s The Everest for Chris Waller.

A new race record time was set in 2024 with Ciaron Maher’s mare I Am Me flying home in a slick 55.97 seconds.

The 2024 Concorde Stakes also produced that year’s The Everest winner with Bella Nipotina improving on her second in the then Group 3 event to win the first Group 1 edition of the richest turf race in the world.

Concorde Stakes Betting

Concorde Stakes betting markets are dominated by short-distance specialists with strong form over the 1000 – 1100m distance range.

Previous Group 1 winners or graduates from the previous season’s The Everest race also sit high up the Concorde Stakes odds, as do in-form sprinters with a good strike-rate at Randwick.

Horses that ran well in the previous year’s Concorde Stakes are also usually kept safe in betting with returning runners boasting a strong record in the race in the past few years including the three-peat of Redzel (2017-19).

In 2021 Nature Strip ($1.50) finally saluted as the favourite having twice been beaten in the race.

Eduardo ($2.70 in 2022) is the latest favourite in Concorde Stakes betting to win.
