Ladbrokes Tip: Coolmore Classic favourites have a poor recent record in the race.
The Coolmore Classic takes place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in March each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and is the sole Group 1 race at the meeting. Open only to fillies and mares aged three-years-old and above the quality handicap event is contested over 1500m and offers a total of $1,000,000 in prize money as of 2024.

The Coolmore Classic winner is exempt from ballot for both the Doncaster Mile and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes – recently known as the Coolmore Legacy Stakes – held at Randwick Racecourse during The Championships in April.
Con Te Partiro (2020) was the last mare to complete the Coolmore Classic – Coolmore Legacy Stakes double.
The latest edition of the Coolmore Classic took place on Saturday March 16, 2024 and was won in a narrow finish by the classy Chris Waller-trained favourite Zougotcha ($3.30F).

- 1st: #1 Zougotcha
- 2nd: #3 Semana
- 3rd: #17 Kimochi
In a thrilling finish orchestrated by jockey James McDonald, Chris Waller’s Zougotcha ($3.30F) surged through the centre of the pack to salute in the 2024 Coolmore Classic results. Fresh off her Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes win, Zougotcha justified her $3.30 favouritism with a gutsy display. McDonald’s perfectly timed ride allowed her to unleash a powerful closing kick, securing a narrow but impressive victory – her second career Group 1 triumph. This win was a crowd-pleaser, rewarding punters who had faith in the champion mare.

Coolmore Classic Betting
Peeping ($15 in 2016) scored an upset win in the Coolmore Classic as a four-year-old. Photo: Steve Hart.
Coolmore Classic betting is usually led by fillies and mares coming off a top two finish in their most recent Group lead-up.
Since 2008 just two Coolmore Classic winners have come off a worse-than-fourth lead-up when Heavens Above (2017) ran ninth in the Millie Fox Stakes before saluting at blowout Coolmore Classic odds of $26, and Con Te Partiro (2020) scored the Coolmore Classic upset at $21 on the back of a Guy Walter Stakes sixth.
In 2018 Daysee Doom did the Millie Fox – Coolmore Classic double as a $21 roughie in betting on the Group 1. Trainer Ron Quinton enjoyed back-to-back Coolmore Classic wins with roughies in the market when in 2019 his mare Dixie Blossoms took out the race, improving on a lead-up second in the Guy Walter Stakes, as a $21 outsider.
Zougotcha (2024) was the last mare to complete the Millie Fox Stakes – Coolmore Classic double.
Coolmore Classic odds favour fillies and mares with proven form up to a mile and Millie Fox Stakes is the most successful recent lead-up.
The race’s barrier draw doesn’t often impact too heavily on the Coolmore Classic odds with a wide spread of winners from across the gates.
Zougotcha ($3.30 in 2024) was the last favourite in Coolmore Classic betting to win.
Coolmore Classic Field
Each autumn the Coolmore Classic race field attracts Australia’s best female sprinter-milers and often attracts a near capacity field including in 2017 when Heavens Above faced 18 rivals in a bumper 19-starter Coolmore Classic field. There was another large field in the Coolmore Classic for 2019 with 20 starters, and again in 2021 when Krone beat 17 rivals home.
The female gallopers in the Coolmore Classic field come from a variety of different lead-up races including the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill and the recently upgraded Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) on Chipping Norton Stakes Day.
For any Melbourne mares, Victoria’s Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) on Blue Diamond Stakes Day can serve as a potential Coolmore Classic lead-up. Espiona (2023) was the last mare to complete the Mannerism Stakes – Coolmore Classic double.

Another good lead-up is Flemington’s Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) currently run on Black Caviar Lightning Day and Aloha (2011) was the last to do the double.
Many fillies and mares coming out of the Coolmore Classic field go on to take on the boys over 100m further in April’s lucrative Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick Racecourse.
Coolmore Classic nominations close the Monday before the race followed by the release of the final field of acceptances on the Wednesday.
2024 Coolmore Classic Field
The final 2024 Coolmore Classic field and barriers will be published right here once announced by Racing NSW.
The Chris Waller-trained Zougotcha heads the Coolmore Classic 2024 final field and betting markets on the Sydney Group 1 at Rosehill this weekend.

Coolmore Classic Tips
Coolmore Classic tips favour proven Group performers in other fillies-and-mares feature races however the favourites have a poor recent record in the race.
From 2004 – 2024 only three favourites saluted for the punters with the latest to win being Aloha ($6 in 2011) followed in 2024 by Zougotcha ($3.30).
Looking for fillies coming off a top two finish is a top Coolmore Classic tip and the only winners in the past 16 years to finish worse than fourth were Eskimo Queen in 2008, Heavens Above in 2017, and Con Te Partiro in 2020.
Other Coolmore Classic tips are to look for graduates out of the Guy Walter Stakes and Millie Fox Stakes at double-figure odds and those drawn in barriers 7 – 9.
2024 Coolmore Classic Tips

- To Win: #3 Semana ($8 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Outstanding Coolmore Classic field this year with plenty of last start winners to choose from, but going for the in-form Ciaron Maher-trained Semana after her third on the trot and bringing in some strong form lines. This four-year-old daughter of Winning Rupert won the Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast by two lengths in January and the form out of this year’s Magic Millions races has been stacking up again and again. She was last seen taking out the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) with 57.5kg. Up in distance again and down 2kgs. Can win.
