Wootton Verni ($3.80F) broke a 570-day drought to claim his first Australian win in the 2025 Coongy Cup results at Caulfield, delivering a breakthrough for trainer Chris Waller. The French-bred son of Wootton Bassett, previously a Group 3 winner in Europe, had gone winless in five local starts but was well-supported following a strong fourth at Sandown. Ridden by Damian Lane, Wootton Verni overcame mid-race quirks and surged through a gap in the straight to hold off outsider Casino Seventeen and Future History, stamping himself as a genuine staying prospect.

Coongy Cup Tips

Top Coongy Cup tips include looking for the best out of the traditional lead-up races including the Naturalism Stakes run at the same track and distance, backing the runners from the better stables and any Group 1 performers down in grade.

2025 Coongy Cup Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Coongy Cup 2025 betting tips and Caulfield racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the stayers to back and sack in the Caulfield Cup lead-up this spring.

To Win: No. 10 Wootton Verni

WOOTTON VERNI (6) lines up in a very winnable edition of Wednesday’s Coongy Cup for the Waller stable, chasing his first Australian victory after steadily building toward a race like this. The Group 3-winning French import was undone by a wet track first-up at Goulburn but has improved with each run since, and now arrives fourth-up, fit and ready. His latest effort was a fourth placing behind Charterhouse over 1800m at Sandown carrying 55.5kg, and it has proven strong form with runner-up Globe going on to dominate odds-on favourite Treasurethe Moment in the Group 1 Might And Power. With a favourable draw, Damian Lane takes the reins, and Wootton Verni drops to 55kg, making him well weighted. He boasts an excellent record at 2000m (3:2-1-0) and finally gets back to his ideal trip. Right setup, right form – he’s primed to strike.
