Ladbrokes Tip: The Gosford Gold Cup now offers Big Dance eligibility.
The Gosford Gold Cup is a popular Black-Type feature race run and won at Gosford Racecourse* on the Central Coast of NSW each May.
*Note, in 2024 the Gosford Gold Cup Day card including The Coast race moved to Newcastle due to the bottomless track conditions and inclement weather at Gosford.

Holding Listed status since 1980 and offering $300,000 in prize money as of 2024, it is one of the more lucrative non-metropolitan Cup races in the state and attracts a quality line-up of gallopers each winter racing season.
Currently held on the same Saturday as the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide and the Gold Coast’s A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day meeting in Queensland, Gosford Gold Cup Day is also host to the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) for the sprinters and the $500,000 The Coast for three and four-year-old horses.
The Gosford Gold Cup distance is set at 2100m* and is a quality handicap race. It began back in 1961 and was originally contested over 10 furlongs (approx. 2000m).
*In 2024 the event ran over an increased distance of 2200m at Newcastle.
Eligibility for Sydney’s The Big Dance race on Melbourne Cup Day is also up for grabs for the winner and runner-up in the Gosford Gold Cup each season.
The latest edition of the Gosford Gold Cup ran on Saturday May 11, 2024 at Newcastle (moved from Gosford on the Central Coast in 2024) with Hezashocka ($4) winning in record time to secure Big Dance eligibility.

Polly Grey ($2.80 in 2021) was the last favourite in Gosford Gold Cup betting to salute for the punters.
There was a notable upset in 2023 with Esti Feny winning at Gosford Gold Cup odds of $31.
Gosford Gold Cup Field

The Gosford Gold Cup race field attracts a class line-up of in-form staying types out of a range of lead-up races in both Sydney and Melbourne over the autumn.
Randwick’s Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) held on All Aged Stakes Day makes a nice lead-up into the Gosford Cup field and most recently produced Polly Grey (3rd in 2021) for her victory and Hezashocka (3rd in 2024) when the Gosford Gold Cup took place at Newcastle.
Another potential lead-up race is the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) run in late April.
Following a run in the Gosford Gold Cup field many gallopers may head up to Brisbane for the winter targeting races like the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2400m) at the end of May or even the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) in June.
Numerian (2022) is the latest horse to complete the Gosford Gold Cup – The Q22 double.
The Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at Rosehill also makes a nice next-up option for Gosford Gold Cup graduates and Polly Grey (2021) was the last to do the double.
Gosford Gold Cup nominations close the Monday of race week with the final field and barrier draw released on the Wednesday.

Gosford Gold Cup Tips
Gosford Gold Cup tips include looking for proven Group-class stayers with winning form over at least 2000m and those with a good lead-up run from the autumn.
Older horses make a good Gosford Gold Cup betting tip as no three-year-old has won since Fleet Zephyr (1973). No filly has ever won the Gosford Gold Cup, but Polly Grey (2021) was the last mare to beat home the boys.
Straight Albert (2012) was the last four-year-old winner giving horses aged five and above the advantage in Gosford Gold Cup tipping.
In 2023 Esti Feny won in an upset as an eight-year-old.
Horses carrying 55.5kg or under also make a top Gosford Gold Cup tip as just two runners in the past 20 years have carried more than that to victory with Destiny’s Kiss (57.5kg in 2016) and Red Excitement (59kg in 2017).
2024 Gosford Gold Cup Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Gosford Gold Cup 2024 betting tips and race selections will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the gallopers to back and sack in the winter staying showdown.
- To Win: #10 Not Usual Glorious ($12 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Open Gosford Gold Cup that could come down simply to who best handles the track. Not Usual Glorious is a notable mudlark who loves the wet (10:6-1-1), but remains a genuine hope with the event moved from Newcastle to Gosford as he also has excellent form on Soft going. The Travis Doudle-trained South Australian visitor is a 40-start veteran who is racing well in easier company. The seven-year-old son of former Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente was fourth at Warrnambool last time out behind Rolls only two lengths beaten with 61.5kg over 1700m. He will relish the step-up in distance and has previous winning form up to 2150m. Drops right back to 54kg and drawn mid-field. Can surprise at double-figures.
