Gunsynd Classic 2022

Saturday June 11, 2022

The Gunsynd Classic is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds run at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day each June.

A key support race on the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature meeting, the Gunsynd Classic is contested over 1600m at set weights and offers $200,000 in prize money.

Racing on the day is headlined by the Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). The Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) is the second richest race on the card.

Other top races held on Stradbroke Handicap Day include the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds, the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) for the stayers, and the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m) for the fillies and mares.

The race was inaugurated in 1989 as the Doomben Classic, before being renamed in 2010, and gained Group 3 status in 1997.

It is now named in honour of champion miler from the 1970s Gunsynd, known as the ‘Goondiwindi Grey’, who recorded wins in some of the country’s biggest races including the Epsom Handicap (1971), Doncaster Handicap (1972) and Cox Plate (1972).

The latest edition of the Gunsynd Classic ran on Saturday June 11, 2022 as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day card in Brisbane and was won in dominant fashion by the Tracey Bartley-trained favourite Kiss Sum ($3.30F).

Gunsynd Classic Tips

Good Gunsynd Classic tips include looking for three-year-olds coming off a top three run in similar events over the winter in Brisbane.

The colts and geldings make the best bet in Gunsynd Classic tipping with Galroof (2002) the last filly to beat home the boys in the event.

Backing runners drawn barrier nine or less is also a key Gunsynd Classic betting tip with Hopfgarten (14 in 2014) the only winner to do so from a double-digit barrier since 2009.

2022 Gunsynd Classic Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive Gunsynd Classic 2022 betting tips and exotic selections on the Group 3 Brisbane clash will be detailed below so stay tuned for the young runners to get behind this season.

  • To Win: #7 Ashgrove ($14 at time of publish)

Going for value and have an upset pending with the Tony Gollan-trained Ashgrove better than his last start 12th in the Rough Habit suggests. Over 2143m in the wet he was never in it beaten over 20 lengths, but he’ll get firmer going and back to a mile here in an arguably easier race. Wide in a big field that day and faces just eight rivals here from barrier five. He boxed on well after early interference the start before to finish third in the Queensland Guineas over 1600m, and should be looking at a top three run at worst again here.

Gunsynd Classic Results

Notable horses to head the Gunsynd Classic results in recent history include: Stylish Century (1990), Tobruk (1999), Saxon (2005), Gem Song (2019), and Ayrton (2021) who set the current race record time winning in 1 minute 34:95 seconds.
