Gunsynd Classic 2022

The Gunsynd Classic is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds run at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day each June.

A key support race on the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature meeting, the Gunsynd Classic is contested over 1600m at set weights and offers $200,000 in prize money.

Racing on the day is headlined by the Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). The Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) is the second richest race on the card.

Other top races held on Stradbroke Handicap Day include the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds, the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) for the stayers, and the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m) for the fillies and mares.

The race was inaugurated in 1989 as the Doomben Classic, before being renamed in 2010, and gained Group 3 status in 1997.

It is now named in honour of champion miler from the 1970s Gunsynd, known as the ‘Goondiwindi Grey’, who recorded wins in some of the country’s biggest races including the Epsom Handicap (1971), Doncaster Handicap (1972) and Cox Plate (1972).

The latest edition of the Gunsynd Classic ran on Saturday June 11, 2022 as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day card in Brisbane and was won in dominant fashion by the Tracey Bartley-trained favourite Kiss Sum ($3.30F).
