Herbert Power Stakes Tips

Good Herbert Power Stakes tips include taking proven staying types coming off a top four run carrying a light weight with ability over the distance.

Single-figure fancies have a strong recent record in the race so taking runners under $10 in betting is also a valuable tip to take on board with your spring punting.

Looking for well-weighted stayers heading towards the upcoming Caulfield Cup & Melbourne Cup staying races of the spring can also make a nice Herbert Power Stakes betting tip.

2025 Herbert Power Stakes Tips

Our insider Herbert Power Stakes 2025 betting tips and Group 2 Caulfield racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race, so you know what stayers to get behind at the best odds on Caulfield Guineas Day.

To Win: No. 5 Whisky On The Hill

WHISKY ON THE HILL (2) gets the perfect opportunity to go back-to-back and potentially book his ticket towards a Melbourne Cup berth on November 4, stepping out from a great draw over his preferred trip in the Herbert Power Stakes. The Ribchester gelding boasts an outstanding record at the 2400m (4:3-0-0) and looks right at home over the mile and a half. His latest run saw him return to form in style with a determined victory in a Black-Type race at Mornington, ending a long winning drought and reminding punters of his genuine staying credentials. Carrying 54kg (a half a kilo over allocation) and partnering with in-form jockey Damian Lane, he gets all the right conditions to perform again. He also owns a previous win at Caulfield over this very track and trip, taking out a BM84 here last October with more weight on his back. While this represents a rise in class, Whisky On The Hill’s staying strength and affinity for the distance make him a live chance once more. Expect him to settle off the speed and hit the line powerfully late. Proven 2400m specialist perfectly placed under the conditions – strong winning chance for mine.

The other majors on the card are the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) which is currently run as the Might And Power and the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m). Along with the three elite levels there are also two Group 2 support acts with the Schillaci Stakes (1100m) for sprinters and the Herbert Power Stakes run over the mile and a half (2400m). There are also two Group 3 events on the program including the Northwood Plume Stakes for the older mares.

Offering a generous $400,000 in total prize money, the race is a quality handicap clash that serves as a traditional lead-up to the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) over the same track / distance later in the month. The last horse to complete the Herbert Power Stakes – Caulfield Cup in the same season was Master O’Reilly (2007).

The 2024 Herbert Power Stakes proved to be a strong form reference, with the runner-up Okita Soushi going on to win the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup in his next start, before finishing third in the Melbourne Cup trifecta.

Many runners contest the Herbert Power Stakes after a run in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington earlier in October, which last produced a winner of the Group 2 with Amralah (7th) in 2015.

The other key lead-up is Moonee Valley’s Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) in late September, which last produced a winner with Big Memory (8th) in 2014.

In 2023 the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission became the first horse since Unsolved (1995) to come via a run in Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) improving on a fourth to stablemate Just Fine to win the Herbert Power Stakes.

Runners may back-up from a Herbert Power Stakes run in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) on Victoria Derby Day, a race the 2015 runner-up Excess Knowledge won before his seventh in the Melbourne Cup.

The 2014 Herbert Power Stakes winner Big Memory ran second in the Lexus Stakes that year after a 10th in the Caulfield Cup, the Lexus won by Signoff who improved on a Herbert Power second two runs earlier. Signoff also went on to run fourth to Protectionist, who crossed fourth in the event in his Australian debut, in that year’s Melbourne Cup.

Herbert Power Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday and final acceptances are out on the Wednesday.
