Ladbrokes Tip: The Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup double is a popular bet with punters each summer!
The Ladbrokes Hobart Cup is a 2400m staying test run and won at Hobart Racecourse each February during the popular Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
The handicap event offers a lucrative $300,000 in prize money as of 2023 and is a time-honoured event first run in 1875.
Currently run on a Sunday as the sole Group race feature of Hobart Cup Day, the race serves as a nice lead-up into the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) a fortnight later. Eastender (2019) was the last horse to complete the Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup double in the same year.
In 2024 the Hobart Cup was won by former two-time Launceston Cup champion Aurora’s Symphony (2022, 2023).
Plenty of quality stayers have taken out the Hobart Cup over the event’s rich history, most famously Piping Lane in 1972 who went on to win that spring’s iconic Melbourne Cup race at Flemington.
The latest edition of the Ladbrokes Hobart Cup took place on Sunday February 11, 2024 and was won in a commanding track record time by former dual Launceston Cup hero Aurora’s Symphony ($8.50).

Hobart Cup Betting
Hobart Cup betting markets are led by in-form summer stayers from local Tasmanian stables with few interstate raiders making the trip. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission (2023) from Sydney followed by Symon Wilde’s Warrnambool-based gelding Aurora’s Symphony (2024) are the latest interstate raiders to win the Hobart Cup.
Runners with previous winning form at the track, the proven mile and a half performers, and those with past Black-Type wins on their CV sit high up the Hobart Cup odds each season.
Favourites have a solid recent record in the Hobart Cup including back-to-back wins by Toorak Affair ($3.40 in 2020) and Double You Tee ($2.80 in 2021).

Hobart Cup Tips
Hobart Cup tips include backing runners with a previous win over the 2400m, those proven at the Hobart track and runners under double-figures in betting.
In-form mares also make a good Hobart Cup tip with three female gallopers winning the race since 2013, most recently Toorak Affair (2013).

- To Win: #4 Ashy Boy ($6.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Wide-open Hobart Cup field on Sunday, but leaning towards Glenn Stevenson’s Star Witness five-year-old Ashy Boy. The consistent gelding has a good Hobart track record (3:1-2-0) and is right down in weight from his last run when carrying 59kg to a distant second here in the Summer Cup (2200m). With 54kg he gets the chance to atone and turn the tables on his last start conqueror. Drawn well in gate six with Craig Newitt to ride. Yet to win over further than 2100m but looks well placed here.
Hobart Cup Form Guide
The Hobart Cup form guide details key details for punters including the race field, lead-up runs, saddlecloth numbers, jockeys, barriers and weights of each horse.
The event serves as a key lead-up into Tasmania’s Launceston Cup, but the Hobart Cup form has also held in bigger and better races many times over the years including in 2007 when the winner Blutigeroo went on to win that year’s Group 1 Tancred Stakes (The BMW) in Sydney.
The 2022 Hobart Cup form was franked with the winner Ho Ho Khan second next-up in the Launceston Cup before heading to Flemington for the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) where he ran a brave fourth behind Duais at 60/1.
In 2023 the Hobart Cup third place-getter Spirit Ridge franked the form with top three runs in a host of other key races that year including the Launceston Cup (3rd), Grafton Cup (3rd), Wyong Cup (3rd), Newcastle Gold Cup (2nd), and most notably a second in the Group 1 The Metropolitan over 2400m in Sydney that spring.
