Ladbrokes Tip: The Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup double is a popular bet with punters each summer!

The Ladbrokes Hobart Cup is a 2400m staying test run and won at Hobart Racecourse each February during the popular Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

The handicap event offers a lucrative $250,000 in prize money and is a time-honoured event first run in 1875.

Currently run on a Sunday as the sole Group race feature of Hobart Cup Day, the race serves as a nice lead-up into the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) a fortnight later.  Eastender (2019) was the last horse to complete the Hobart Cup – Launceston Cup double.

Plenty of quality stayers have taken out the Hobart Cup over the event’s rich history, most famously Piping Lane in 1972 who went on to win that spring’s iconic Melbourne Cup race at Flemington.

The latest edition of the Ladbrokes Hobart Cup took place on Sunday February 13, 2022 and saw Ho Ho Khan ($5.50) carrying the 59kg top-weight to a powerhouse four-length victory.

Like the price and consistency of this local Angela Brakey-trained veteran, the eight-year-old still showing plenty of zip for racing having won his past two on the trot. Looking to make it a hat-trick here after a big WFA effort at the track with 59kg last time out winning by over three lengths over 2200m. Down to 56kg and will see out the mile and a half no worries despite what his record over the distance says (6:0-0-1). Ran ninth in this in 2019 and 11th last year off similar form. Still, its a more open affair and think he can finally surprise them.
