Ladbrokes Tip: The Kembla Grange Classic is a good lead-up into the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes for fillies
The Kembla Grange Classic – registered as the Keith F Nolan Classic – is a Group 3 mile race run over 1600m held by the Illawarra Turf Club at Kembla Grange Racecourse* on a Friday in March on the eve of Sydney’s Coolmore Classic Day at Rosehill.
*Note: The 2022 Kembla Grange Classic was been moved from the abandoned Kembla Grange meeting to Goulburn Racecourse on the same day due to heavy rainfall.
Offering $200,000 in prize money, the 1600m event is a set weights plus penalties race for three-year-old fillies.
First contested in 2003 it has held Group 3 status since 2010 and the registered race name is in honour of the founding chairman of the Illawarra Turf Club, Keith F. Nolan.
Despite its short history the Kembla Grange Classic has been won by many nice mares including Hot Danish (2007) who now also has a race named in her honour, the Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) held in November.
The Kembla Grange Classic can serve as a nice lead-up into upcoming Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival features for the fillies including the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) run at the end of the month.
Single Gaze (2016) was the last runner to complete the Kembla Grange Classic – Vinery Stud Stakes double.
The latest edition of the Kembla Grange Classic ran on Friday March 11, 2022 at Goulburn Racecourse with the Group 3 moved from the abandoned Kembla Grange meeting on the same day and saw the Chris Waller-trained filly Pretty Amazing ($2.90F) win as race favourite.

- To Win: #10 Charity Spirit ($26 at time of publish)
Going for a blowout and have Charity Spirit as the roughie of the day at 25/1 to upset a field of better fancied fillies in the relocated Kembla Grange Classic. She’s proven at the Goulburn track, is a genuine miler and so gets the course and distance to suit. The Heavy track is an unknown for many of these, but her only other run in the going was a very close second over 2000m as the beaten odds-on favourite on a Heavy (9). She gets through it and can surprise at a big price.
