The Ciaron Maher trained Jimmysstar ($7.50) was outstanding first-up for the autumn coming with a sensational late burst to run over the top of beaten favourite She’s Bulletproof and post his maiden Group 1 victory off a gun Ethan Brown ride in the Oakleigh Plate 2025 results.

The Group 1 Oakleigh Plate is one of three elite level Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival races that traditionally runs at Caulfield Racecourse as part of Blue Diamond Stakes Day annually in late February. An open handicap sprint the clash takes place over 1100m and offers $750,000 in total prize money.

Running at the same meeting as the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) the event attracts a capacity field of 18 sprinters.

Many Oakleigh Plate horses come out of a run a week earlier in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) run down the Flemington straight. The last horse to complete the Oakleigh Plate – Lightning Stakes double was Fastnet Rock (2005).

Oakleigh Plate betting is usually an open affair with plenty of mixed form leading up to the race.

Recent Oakleigh Plate winners who won their last Group lead-up include Lankan Rupee (2014), Shamal Wind (2015), Marabi (2022) who took out the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at the Valley, with last start winners often dominating the markets, and Queman (2024) who won the Listed W.J. Adams at the track the month before.

Wide barrier draws don’t often have an impact on the Oakleigh Plate odds as plenty of winners have drawn wide including Jimmysstar (14 in 2025), Uncommon James (13 in 2023), Pippie (14 in 2020), Booker (14 in 2019), Russian Revolution (10 in 2018), Flamberge (15 in 2016), Shamal Wind (14 in 2015), Mrs Onassis (11 in 2013), and Swiss Ace (18 in 2009).

Pippie ($12) was the last double-figure winner in Oakleigh Plate 2020 betting until 2021 when Portland Sky ($10) ran a dead-heat to share the top prize with Celebrity Queen ($9.50).

Marabi ($2.60 in 2022) was the last favourite in Oakleigh Plate betting to salute.

There was another notable upset in 2024 with Queman saluting at Oakleigh odds of $17.

A maximum of 18 starters line-up in the Oakleigh Plate race field and the race recently ran at capacity in 2018 when the favourite Russian Revolution saluted, 2019 when Booker scored an upset win and again in 2020 when Pippie became the second mare to salute from barrier 14 in as many years.

There was yet another 18-starter Oakleigh Plate field in 2021 when Celebrity Queen and Portland Sky ran a dead-heat for first.

The Oakleigh Plate field often features star stallions in the making and has been won by the likes of Snitzel (2006) and Fastnet Rock (2005).

Many horses also run first-up in the Oakleigh Plate field.

Jimmysstar (2025) was the last first-up Oakleigh Plate winner.

Alternatively, any three-year-olds in the event may have had an earlier autumn lead-up in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m). Portland Sky (2021), who dead-heated with Celebrity Queen in the Oakleigh Plate – was the last to do the double.

The Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) held a fortnight earlier makes an excellent Oakleigh Plate lead-up. In 2023 the same two horses ran one-two in both the Rubiton and Oakleigh Plate. Lofty Strike one the Rubiton and was second in the Oakleigh, while Uncommon James improved on his Rubiton Stakes second to turn the tables in the Group 1.

That is a lovely price for this Tony & Calvin McEvoy trained three-year-old by sire of the moment Too Darn Hot. The 1100m might be a bit short for a few of these but not her! Her strike-rate at the distance is brilliant (4:3-0-1). This is obviously a class rise up to Group 1 company but her lead-up victory a fortnight back in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes here was strong. She’s now proven at Caulfield and ready to fly coming back from 57kg to just 52kg. In form hoop Jamie Melham comes aboard for the ride. Will need a touch of luck from wide out in gate 15 but can surprise.
