The Pakenham Cup was moved back to December in late 2024 with two official editions taking place that year!
The Pakenham Cup is a popular showdown now run and won at Victoria’s Pakenham Racecourse in late December.

Pakenham Cup Day originally took place in December over the summer but was moved ahead of the first 2024 edition to run on a Friday in mid-March over the autumn.
There will officially be two 2024 Pakenham Cup races with the Black-Type feature moving back to December again.
Offering a lucrative $300,000 in stakes the Pakenham Cup is one of the richer provincial cup races taking place on the outskirts of Melbourne.
The event is contested over 2500m and is a handicap race.
In 2024 it took place on the day before the All-Star Mile held on the Saturday in March with Ashrun saluting before running for a second time that calendar year on December 21.
The Pakenham Cup replaced the Listed Werribee Cup in 2016 when the Pakenham Racing Club began racing at its new track at Tynong.
Plenty of top stayers have won the Werribee Cup / Pakenham Cup over the years including three-time Melbourne Cup hero Makybe Diva who took out the race in 2002 at just her sixth start.
It was held under the lights on a Friday night in 2024 for the first time in the event’s long history before returning to its December daytime slot later in the same year.
The next edition of the Pakenham Cup and second for 2024 takes place on Saturday December 21, 2024.

Pakenham Cup Betting
Pakenham Cup betting is open at the start of race week and markets are led by proven staying types especially any with previous winning form over the 2400m plus distance range.
Any last start winners, returning runners that finished well in the event the year before and Group performers down in grade are traditionally installed at shorter Pakenham Cup odds.
Kissinger ($3.70 in 2022) and Ashrun ($2.90 in March 2024) are the latest Pakenham Cup favourites to salute for the punters.
Pakenham Cup Tips
Good Pakenham Cup tips include backing in-form stayers, last start winners and well-weighted horses in the long distance event.
Plenty of higher rated and weighted stayers have won the race and backing the classier gallopers is a strong Pakenham Cup betting tip. Recent runners to carry big weights to victory in the event include Unusual Suspect (60.5kg in 2012), Pelicano (60kg in 2013), Pilote D’Essai (58kg in 2016), Attorney (59.5kg in 2020), and that year’s favourite Ashrun (58kg in March 2024).
Tipping the male runners is another key Pakenham Cup betting tip with just two mares having won the race since 2006, most recently Etah James (2019).

Pakenham Cup Field
The Pakenham Cup race field attracts a quality line-up of mainly local stayers.
A good lead-up into the Pakenham Cup field is the Listed $500,000 Ballarat Cup (2000m) held in November. Pilote D’Essai (2016) was the last horse to complete the Ballarat Cup – Pakenham Cup double.
Other good Pakenham Cup lead-up races include October’s Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) and the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) held over the two miles the Saturday prior.
Smokin’ Romans (2nd in 2021) was the last Pakenham Cup winner to come via a Bendigo Cup lead-up.
Pakenham Cup nominations are taken the Monday before the race runs on the Friday with final acceptances and the barrier draw released on the Wednesday.
