Queensland Cup 2021

Saturday October 9, 2021

Ladbrokes Tip: The Queensland Cup is currently contested over the spring as a potential Caulfield Cup lead-up.

The Queensland Cup is a staying race currently held at Eagle Farm Racecourse over the spring racing carnival having previously been held as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Formerly a two-mile race over 3,200m the event was postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19 and the rescheduled race ran that spring over 2,200m.

In 2021 the event remains a spring feature run in early October on the same day as Melbourne’s Caulfield Guineas Day program but is now run and won over 2,400m.

Offering $130,000 and now contested at set weights plus penalties, the Queensland Cup serves as a potential lead-up into the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

The latest edition of the Queensland Cup ran on Saturday October 9, 2021 and was won by the favourite Honorable Spirit ($2.60).

Queensland Cup Betting

Queensland Cup betting markets are led by in-form winter stayers with previous form in similar grade Queensland races.

Any interstate raiders making the trip up to the sunshine state for the event also sit high up the Queensland Cup odds each season.

With the Queensland Cup race now held in the spring, Sydney’s Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) serves as a credible lead-up with Grey Lion (3rd in 2020) the last Queensland Cup winner to come out of that event.

Azuro ($2.70 in 2018) followed by Honorable Spirit ($2.60 in 2021) are the latest favourites in Queensland Cup betting to win.

Queensland Cup Tips

Good Queensland Cup tips include backing stayers coming off a top three run in Group 2 or 3 grade over the 2000m – 2400m distance range in Brisbane and any past Eagle Farm winners.

Backing the lighter-weighted runners is also a solid Queensland Cup betting tip with just four horses carrying more than 55.5kg to victory since 2000, most recently Grey Lion (59kg in 2020).

Interstate raiders have a dominant recent record in the Queensland Cup results so backing those coming from Melbourne or Sydney stables can prove profitable when doing the Queensland Cup tipping.

2021 Queensland Cup Tips

Our insider Queensland Cup 2021 betting tips and Black-Type Brisbane racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race so you know what mares to get behind at the best odds on Queensland Cup Day.

  • To Win: #2 Honourable Spirit ($2.35 at time of publish)

He’s very short in betting but impossible to tip against the rails-drawn favourite from the Gold Coast stables of John Smerdon. Such a consistent horse with a lead-up record that reads 1-1-2-1-2. That form says he is due for a win after running a close second last time out in the Toowoomba Cup. Up in weight and needs to run out a strong mile and a half for the first time, but in red hot form and rails run can help him to do so.

Queensland Cup Field

The Queensland Cup field attracts a quality line-up of stayers coming off lead-up runs either in Queensland or interstate over the mile and a half.

Queensland Cup nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday and final acceptances are out on the Wednesday.

2021 Queensland Cup Field

The official Queensland Cup 2021 Final Field & Barriers on the event will be provided in full below once announced on the Wednesday of race week so stay tuned to see the list of stayers set to face off in the sprint feature.
