EVAPORATE (9) stands out as the class act in this year’s Sandown Stakes. With RISE AT DAWN scratched, the path clears for Lindsay Park’s talented Per Incanto four-year-old to assert his credentials. Second-up and primed to improve, he comes off a luckless fifth in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes—where everything went against him. From pre-race barrier delays to missing the jump, a dawdling tempo, and being hemmed in late, he never got a chance to show his hand.
Despite that, he was only beaten 2.8 lengths, and there’s every reason to expect sharp improvement. While his campaign has been slightly interrupted, he’s a proven Group 2 winner over a mile and boasts Group 1 form from the Caulfield Guineas as a three-year-old. He concedes weight, but the stable has fine-tuned his gear to ensure a cleaner getaway. From there, it’s up to Blake Shinn to navigate the run. On exposed form and class, he’s the one to beat.

The Sandown Stakes is a popular Group 3 spring event now held in late September or early October.
Prior to 2021 the event ran in November on Zipping Classic Day, while it has recently taken place on Underwood Stakes Day.
It is now held earlier during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Sandown Hillside.
In 2023 the Sandown Stakes was the sole Group status race on the card with the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) for Cox Plate hopefuls moved to the weekend prior.
In 2024 the event ran as the only Group event at the meeting but was held on a Saturday.
In 2025 the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) joined the Sandown Stakes Day line-up.
Contested over 1500m the race offers $200,000 in prize money, and the Sandown Stakes is a quality handicap showdown.
First held in 1981 the Sandown Stakes has held Group 3 status since 1984.

In 2022 the Sandown Stakes winner Gentleman Roy ran fourth next-up in the Toorak Handicap results, while the Sandown runner-up Military Expert was third in that year’s Toorak trifecta.
The 2023 Sandown Stakes champ Antino was also good in that year’s Toorak running second franking the form out of the Group 3 lead-up.
Desert Lightning won the 2024 Sandown Stakes before a next-up fourth in the Toorak Handicap, while Craig ran second in both events.
