Ladbrokes Tip: The Sandown Stakes now runs on its own feature race meeting in late September over the spring carnival
The Sandown Stakes is a popular Group 3 spring event now held in late September or early October.
Prior to 2021 the event ran in November on Zipping Classic Day, while it has recently taken place on Underwood Stakes Day.
It is now held earlier during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Sandown Hillside.
In 2023 the Sandown Stakes was the sole Group status race on the card with the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) for Cox Plate hopefuls moved to the weekend prior.
In 2024 the event again runs as the only Group event at the meeting but is held on a Saturday.
Contested over 1500m the race offers $200,000 in prize money, and the Sandown Stakes is a quality handicap showdown.
First held in 1981 the Sandown Stakes has held Group 3 status since 1984.
The next edition of the Sandown Stakes runs at Sandown Hillside on Saturday September 28th, 2024 as a potential lead-up to the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.

Sandown Stakes betting markets are led by the season’s in-form middle-distance gallopers coming off good lead-up runs in similar grade and distance races.
Since the race was moved to an earlier time-slot, Sandown Stakes odds are now focused on horses gearing up towards the mile features in October.
Elephant ($2.30 in 2021) and Antino ($1.35 in 2023) are the latest Sandown Stakes favourites to win.
Sandown Stakes Field
The Sandown Stakes race field traditionally attracts a quality line-up of mile types coming off lead-up runs in earlier Melbourne Spring Carnival events.
Following a run in the Sandown Stakes field in September gallopers may continue on to tougher grade spring features including the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) or the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) on Cox Plate Day.
In 2022 the Sandown Stakes winner Gentleman Roy ran fourth next-up in the Toorak Handicap results, while the Sandown runner-up Military Expert was third in that year’s Toorak trifecta.
The 2023 Sandown Stakes champ Antino was also good in that year’s Toorak running second franking the form out of the Group 3 lead-up.
