The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is a handicap clash for middle distance sprint types held at Caulfield Racecourse and now takes place in November having been moved from its previous September timeslot ahead of the 2023 edition.
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day also now features the Group 1 $1.5 million Thousand Guineas (1600m) for the three-year-old fillies.

Other Group status races on the card include the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1400m), Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m), and the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m).
Raced over 1400m and worth $1 million in prize money, the race previously served as a good lead-up into the Toorak Handicap with Trust In A Gust (2014) was the last galloper to complete the popular Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes – Toorak Handicap double before the former was moved to after the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Inaugurated in 1951 when Jovial Lad scored the race was originally known as the Invitation Stakes and it has held Group 1 status since a 1979 upgrade. It was renamed in honour of former Victorian Amateur Turf Club chairman Sir Rupert Clarke after his death in 2005.
Many notable horses have won the race including Stratum Star (2015), Moment Of Change (2012), Exceed And Excel (2003), dual Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes champ Testa Rossa (1999 & 2000), and Encosta De Lago (1996).
The Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at the same track and distance serves as an early lead-up into the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes with star South Australian galloper Behemoth (2020) the last to do the double.
For the first time in 2023 the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner also earned a guaranteed start in the following autumn’s $4 million The All-Star Mile race held in 2024 on March 16 at Caulfield Racecourse.
It was the first ‘Win and You’re In’ race for the 2024 All-Star Mile.
