First contested in 1881, The Goodwood is a Group 1 race held in May during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival for sprinters. Contested at Morphettville Racecourse the event is contested over 1200m and offers a total of a lucrative $1 million in prize money as of 2024.

Formerly a handicap event known as The Goodwood Handicap, the race is now run at set weights plus penalties.

It takes place after the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2400m) and the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) for fillies and mares, which is a traditional lead-up into The Goodwood for female sprinters. Recent winners of the Robert Sangster Stakes – The Goodwood double include Black Caviar (2012) and Platelet (2013).

There are four Group 3 support races on The Goodwood Day card with the running of the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m), Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m), Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) run in 2024 as The Cummings Stakes, and the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) which currently runs as the David Coles AM Stakes.

The latst edition of The Goodwood ran on Saturday May 11, 2024 at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse with stakes increased to $1 million and was won by the Jason Warren-trained Stradbroke Handicap-bound mare Benedetta ($6) ridden by Jamie Kah.

The Jason Warren-trained RN Irwin winning Hellbent mare, Benedetta ($6), improved on her lead-up third in the Robert Sangster returning to the same track and trip to post a narrow victory in The Goodwood 2024 results thanks to a gun ride by last weekend’s SA Derby winning jockey Jamie Kah.

Benedetta defeated the Phillip Stokes-trained duo of Harry Angel filly Stretan Angel and Robert Sangster winner Climbing Star to lead The Goodwood trifecta 2024 ahead of her trip to Brisbane for the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 15.

The Goodwood Betting

The Goodwood betting odds are usually led by the season’s top performing sprinters, especially in-form mares that ran well in the Robert Sangster Stakes last start.

Proven form in Adelaide is good, but not crucial with plenty of runners coming out of interstate runs like the TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney or Melbourne’s Newmarket Handicap that autumn.

Favourites in The Goodwood odds only have a fair recent record, so looking for value in markets is key.

The only favourites to salute since Keeper (2001) are Takeover Target (2009), superstar Black Caviar (2012) and Black Heart Bart (2016).

Recent years have seen roughies in The Goodwood betting salute including Royal Merchant ($18 in 2023), Lombardo ($18 in 2022), Savatoxl ($19 in 2021), Despatch ($21 in 2019) and Santa Ana Lane ($26 in 2018).

The Goodwood Field

The Goodwood race field is made up of classy local and interstate sprinters, many gearing up for similar features in Queensland during the following Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Horses trained outside of South Australia have a strong recent record in the race, and gallopers come off a variety of different lead-ups from right around Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Fillies and mares traditionally come out of the Robert Sangster Stakes at the same track and distance a fortnight early, which produced three of the six The Goodwood winners from 2010 – 2016.

More recently, the 2021 Robert Sangster Stakes winning filly Instant Celebrity backed-up to run second in The Goodwood results behind upset winner Savatoxl.

In 2023 Another Award and Zapateo ran second and third respectively in both the Robert Sangster Stakes and The Goodwood results.

In 2024 Climbing Star won the Robert Sangster before finishing third in The Goodwood behind that year’s Robert Sangster Stakes third place-getter Benedetta who turned the tables.

A key lead-up into The Goodwood field each year is the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) held at the track a fortnight earlier and Savatoxl (2021) was the last horse to do the double.

In 2023 the filly Royal Merchant won The Goodwood on the back of a lead-up victory at the track in the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m) against the fellow three-year-olds.

Nominations for The Goodwood are taken on a Tuesday about two weeks prior to the race, while the final The Goodwood field of acceptors is out the Tuesday of race week.

There is plenty of value to be found doing The Goodwood tips as upsets in Adelaide’s premier sprint race are not uncommon.

Fillies and mares have a strong recent record in the race winning all four editions from 2010 – 2013, so looking for the best out of the Robert Sangster Stakes two weeks earlier is a good The Goodwood betting tip.

The girls were on top again in 2023 dominating The Goodwood results with the filly Royal Merchant defeating the mares Another Award (2nd) and Zapateo (3rd).

Wide barriers aren’t a hindrance as Flamberge saluted in 2015 from 16 of 17, so instead look for Group 1 performed horses at the 1200m distance.

Big price offered on the last start Group 1 Robert Sangster winner at this track and trip, and she definitely looks overs! This talented and consistent Phillip Stokes-trained Zoustar mare is a fit four-year-old in peak form. Two back in the Group 3 RN Irwin here she made up plenty of ground only to go under a quarter length before improving to overcome gate 14 of 14 and beat Learning To Fly in the Robert Sangster. Learning To Fly was a key The Goodwood contender but scratched. Climbing Star is wide out again (barrier 13), but she proved she could do it from out there last time. Hard to see why she is at this price. Can surprise again.

Aurie’s Star is the heaviest-weighted The Goodwood winner in history carrying 10 stone (63.5 kg) to victory in 1940.

Benedetta (2024) was the last The Goodwood winning mare.
