The Rosebud 2023

Ladbrokes Tip: The Rosebud is a key lead-up into the lucrative Group 1 Golden Rose each spring.

The Rosebud is a popular Listed race for three-year-olds run and won in mid-August as part of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The Black-Type clash was formerly held a week earlier on Missile Stakes Day, but as of 2022 has moved to its own feature race meeting at Rosehill Gardens.

Open only to three-year-old horses, the event takes place over 1100m and offers $200,000 in prize money.

A quality handicap showdown, The Rosebud serves as a traditional lead-up into the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) the following month.

Previously a 1200m race, The Rosebud distance was reduced to 1100m in 2017 when it moved from Randwick to Rosehill and gained Listed status for the first time in 2011.

The latest edition of The Rosebud ran on Saturday August 12th, 2023 as the feature race that day at Rosehill Gardens and was won by the autumn’s Percy Sykes runner-up Tiz Invincible ($3.40F) from the Maher/Eustace stable.

The Rosebud Field

The Rosebud race field attracts a quality line-up of Golden Rose-bound three-year-olds each spring.

Following a run in The Rosebud field good next-up options include the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) back at the same track and distance, and the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m).

Anders (2020) was the last three-year-old to do The Rosebud – San Domenico Stakes double, while Menari (2017) was the last to complete The Rosebud – Run To The Rose double.

Menari also holds the weight-carrying record in The Rosebud carting a hefty 60.5kg to victory in 2017.

In 2021 In The Congo improved on a second in The Rosebud to win the San Domenico next-up, run second in the Run To The Rose and win that year’s Golden Rose. That year’s The Rosebud winner, Paulele, finished second in the San Domenico Stakes.

The early The Rosebud 2023 nominations are taken by Racing NSW on the Monday of race week and will be detailed below.

The Rosebud Tips

Good The Rosebud tips to consider before placing your spring bets include looking at resuming runners with a strong record when fresh, past winners over the distance and youngsters with form the Sydney way of going.

Another key The Rosebud betting tip is to avoid the fillies as the only ones to beat home the boys to date are She’s A Fox in 2012 and Tiz Invincible over a decade later in 2023.

2023 The Rosebud Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider The Rosebud 2023 betting tips for the Listed showdown for three-year-olds will be detailed below the week of the race.

  • To Win: #5 Cigar Flick ($5 at time of publish)

Open edition of The Rosebud, but going with Chris Waller’s well-tried Churchill filly Cigar Flick with the fitness edge over some of her rivals. She was solid last prep including a Group 2 Reisling Stakes third behind Learning To Fly, and her Rosehill record is strong (4:2-0-0). Comes off a good first-up win at Randwick in a 2YO Handicap with 57kg. Back up in class, but at the right course and comes down in weight. Big chance.

The Rosebud Form Guide

The Rosebud form guide is released as soon as the field of final acceptors is out the week of the race and features crucial information including the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of the horses in the line-up.

The Rosebud form has stacked up in other Sydney and Melbourne Group races many times in recent years including the Golden Rose Stakes being won in 2021 by The Rosebud runner-up In The Congo.

The 2021 The Rosebud winner, Paulele, went on to place in a host of subsequent Group 1 events the following year in 2022 including the TJ Smith Stakes (3rd), Doomben 10,000 (2nd), and Kingsford-Smith Cup (2nd).

Looking further back in 2016 the filly Lasqueti Spirit finished second last in that year’s The Rosebud but would go on to salute in that season’s Group 1 VRC Oaks at Flemington as a triple-figure roughie.
