Ladbrokes Tip: The Thousand Guineas Prelude is the key Thousand Guineas lead-up
The Thousand Guineas is a mile feature now held at Caulfield Racecourse in November at the tail-end of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for three-year-old fillies offering a lucrative $1.5 million in prize money.

It has been held on various dates over the years and was moved from October to November in 2024 to run on the same card as the Group 1 $1 million Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).
The other Group races on the program are the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1400m), Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m), and the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m).
The 1600m set weights features was first run in 1946 and from 1988 – 2013 also took place on a Wednesday during the Spring Carnival. It has held elite level status since 1979 and notable Thousand Guineas winners include Wenona Girl (1960), Alinghi (2004), Miss Finland (2006), and Atlantic Jewel (2011).
The better fillies out of the Thousand Guineas may continue on to take on the older mares in Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m), a race the 2020 Thousand Guineas winner Odeum ran second in.
This season the 2024 Thousand Guineas ran on Saturday November 16, 2024 and was won in an upset by Another Prophet at $31 for trainer Ciaron Maher.

Thousand Guineas Betting
Thousand Guineas betting is hugely popular each Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and is dominated by in-form fillies coming via the traditional lead-up runs into the Group 1.
The Thousand Guineas Prelude top three placegetters always feature highly up the Thousand Guineas betting markets, as do those fillies drawn near the inside with just one Thousand Guineas winner having jumped from wider than barrier nine since 2004.
Favourites high up the Thousand Guineas odds have an excellent recent record in the mile feature too with five saluting for the punters from 2008 – 2016.
The favourites were back on top in the 2019 Thousand Guineas results with Flit ($2.35) saluting as the top elect, the last favourite to win.
There was a notable upset in 2021 however with Yearning winning at a $26 Thousand Guineas starting price, while Madame Pommery won at $9.50 in 2022 and Another Prophet was at a blowout price of $31 for her win in 2024.
Thousand Guineas Tips
Top Thousand Guineas tips include looking for any fillies that may have recently been running against the colts and geldings that are coming back against their own kind, backing the proven milers in the race that may have contested Sydney’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and those drawn in barriers 1 – 9.
Madame Pommery (6th in 2022) was the last Flight Stakes runner to head south and win the Thousand Guineas.
2024 Thousand Guineas Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Thousand Guineas 2024 betting tips and Caulfield racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the fillies to back and sack in the Group 1 this spring.
- To Win: #4 Zeitung ($4.80 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Outstanding edition of the Thousand Guineas with an open market and plenty of winning hopes bringing in varying form lines but happy to put the Godolphin-raced Zeitung on top to complete the double after her eye-catching The Vanity victory last time out. James Cummings’ progressive daughter of Exceed And Excel is now a three-time winner from nine starts and is confident. She presents fit, was good when second in the Prelude and better winning Flemington’s Group 3 Vanity on Derby Day by over a length. She’ll get things her way from barrier four, Jamie Kah is riding extremely well and believe this filly will see out the mile without issue.
Thousand Guineas Form Guide
The Thousand Guineas form guide features all the info punters need to place a well-informed wager on the mile showdown including the saddlecloth number, barrier, trainer and jockey of all the fillies in the field.
Looking for a runner drawn between barriers 4 – 6 is a good tip as these gates have produced the most winners in recent years, while just two winners have jumped from double digits in the past decade with Serious Speed (10 in 2007) and Amphitrite (15 in 2018).
Since 2008 six last start winners have gone on to win the Thousand Guineas including Guelph (2013) who took out the Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas double, subsequently completed by Global Glamour (2016). Before her the last Thousand Guineas champ to come via the other Group 1 was Yosei (2010) who ran sixth in the Flight Stakes before winning the Thousand Guineas as a 10/1 chance.
Thousand Guineas Form Facts
- Serious Speed (2007) was the last winner to jump from a double-digit Thousand Guineas barrier before the success of Amphitrite (2018) from the outside alley (15).
- From 2006 – 2024 seven favourites in Thousand Guineas betting have saluted for the punters.
- In that time six Thousand Guineas winners started at double-figures with Yosei ($11 in 2010), Commanding Jewel ($10 in 2012), Aloisia ($14 in 2017), Amphitrite ($13 in 2018), Yearning ($26 in 2021), and Another Prophet ($31 in 2024).
