The Thousand Guineas is a mile feature held at Caulfield Racecourse in early to mid-October every Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for three-year-old fillies and is worth a lucrative $1 million in prize money.
It was previously one of four Group 1 features on Caulfield Guineas Day before being moved to the following Wednesday in 2021 as its own feature race day alongside three Group 3 events including the Blue Sapphire Stakes , Ladies’ Day Vase and Coongy Cup for Caulfield Cup hopefuls.
The 1600m set weights features was first run in 1946 and from 1988 – 2013 also took place on a Wednesday during the Spring Carnival. It has held elite level status since 1979 and notable Thousand Guineas winners include Wenona Girl (1960), Alinghi (2004), Miss Finland (2006) and Atlantic Jewel (2011).
The better fillies out of the Thousand Guineas may continue on to take on the older mares in Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m), a race the 2020 Thousand Guineas winner Odeum ran second in.
This season the 2021 Thousand Guineas ran on Wednesday October 13, 2021 and was won in an upset by the Hawkes Racing-trained Yearning at 25/1.
