Ladbrokes Tip: The Tulloch Stakes is a good betting guide to the ATC Derby in Sydney each autumn.

The Tulloch Stakes is a Group 2 support race on the Tancred Stakes Day card at Rosehill Gardens on a Saturday in late March each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Two elite levels headline the bill with the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) run at weight-for-age and the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) for the three-year-old fillies.

Also run over the 2000m is the Tulloch Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings that face off at set weights vying for $300,000 in total prize money.

The Tulloch Stakes is a traditional lead-up race to the following weekend’s Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) over the mile and a half at Randwick during ‘The Championships’ and the double was last achieved by the likes of Starcraft (2004), Jon Snow (2017), Levendi (2018), Angel Of Truth (2019), and Quick Thinker (2000).

The latest edition of the Tulloch Stakes ran on Saturday March 30, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens as part of Tancred Stakes Day and was won by the up-in-class Michael Freedman-trained top elect Wymark ($2.70F).

The Michael Freedman-trained Wymark ($2.70F) handled his first Group race assignment posting his fourth straight win in the Tulloch Stakes 2024 results when saluting as favourite ahead of a quick back-up into the ATC Derby field at Randwick.

Tulloch Stakes Betting

Official Tulloch Stakes betting markets open after the field of final acceptances is announced the Wednesday before the race but all-in odds are available once nominations are out.

Three-year-olds coming off a good lead-up in an earlier Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival event like the Phar Lap Stakes dominate the Tulloch Stakes odds.

Previous form up to at least 1500m or further and experience at the Rosehill track also help determine the order of the Tulloch Stakes markets each autumn.

There was an upset in the 2023 Tulloch Stakes with Tapildoodledo winning at a price of 19/1.

Wymark ($2.70 in 2024) is the last Tulloch Stakes favourite to salute.

The Tulloch Stakes race field attracts a quality line-up of three-year-old colts and geldings with staying ambition and potential.

It is run a week before the Australian Derby and is a last minute option for youngsters to make the Group 1 field over 400m further the following Saturday at Sydney’s other leading race track.

Many runners in the Tulloch Stakes field come off an earlier March run at the track in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m). In 2016 Old North ran fourth in the Phar Lap Stakes before his Tulloch Stakes win and the previous year Tulloch Stakes winner Hauraki (2015) came off a Phar Lap Stakes second. Hauraki also backed up to run second in the 2015 ATC Derby.

More recently, the 2020 Tulloch Stakes winner Quick Thinker improved on his lead-up third behind two Group 1 winning fillies – Funstar (1st) and Probabeel (2nd) – in the Phar Lap Stakes results.

The 2021 Tulloch Stakes winner Yaletown was also a Phar Lap Stakes graduate having run fourth the start before the key lead-up, while in 2022 Character won the Tulloch improving on a third placing in the Phar Lap the start prior.

Tulloch Stakes nominations are taken on the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday followed by the release of the final field and barriers on the Wednesday.
