Ladbrokes Tip: Horses coming off a Melbourne lead-up run have dominated the Winterbottom Stakes in recent years

The latest edition of the Winterbottom Stakes ran on Saturday November 29, 2025 as the second Group 1 event of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival in WA and saw the Rob & Annabel Neasham trained Libertad ($21) get his nose out right on the line to deny Overpass a triple in the sprint feature.

Libertad ($21) produced one of the biggest shocks of the Pinnacles Carnival when he narrowly headed the 2025 Winterbottom Stakes results at Ascot on Saturday. Sent out at long odds, the five-year-old Russian Revolution entire trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald and ridden by Jamie Mott surged late to deny hot favourite Overpass a historic third consecutive victory in the race.

Mott tracked Overpass throughout and seized the inside run when the favourite rolled off the fence on the home turn, driving Libertad to the front in a thrilling head-to-head battle. The nose margin made for one of the most dramatic Winterbottom finishes in recent memory, with Rey Magnerio finishing third just half a length away.

The victory delivered Libertad his first Group 1 success, boosted his profile as a stallion prospect, and gave Mott a career highlight with his fourth Group 1 win, while simultaneously ending Overpass’s bid for a rare three-peat in Western Australia’s premier sprint.

The Winterbottom Stakes is one of the three Group 1 Perth Summer Racing Carnival features run at Ascot Racecourse annually and is the feature race of the late November – early December meeting.

Contested over 1200m the sprint feature is run at weight-for-age a week after the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), both elite level events offering $1.5 million in prize money.

Horses come into the race via a host of different lead-up races, but the previous month’s Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) and also the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) both held in W.A. earlier in November have been good guides to the Group 1 in recent years.

The Colonel Reeves Stakes – Winterbottom Stakes double was most recently achieved by Barakey (2012). More recently, Graceful Girl (2021) improved on a lead-up second in the Colonel Reeves to win the Group 1 at $9.

Horses that run well in the Winterbottom Stakes are now likely to target the following autumn’s $4 million The Quokka (1200m) slot-race held the first time in April of 2023.

In 2023 Overpass won the inaugural The Quokka race before returning to Ascot that summer to salute in the Winterbottom Stakes. 

Overpass returned in the April of 2024 to successfully defend his The Quokka title further franking the Winterbottom Stakes form. 

Overpass would then run in the 2024 Winterbottom Stakes and win to become the first dual champion of the event since Buffering (2013 & 2015) and the first on back-to-back years since Hardrada (2002-03). 

Overpass returned in 2025 chasing an historic three-peat but was narrowly denied right on the line by upset 20/1 champion Libertad.

Winterbottom Stakes Betting

All-in futures Winterbottom Stakes betting on the likely line-up opens the month before the race soon after nominations close. The markets firm once the Winterbottom Stakes field and barriers are confirmed the week of the race.

Last-start winners won four of the five editions of the race from 2011 – 2015, so sprinters coming off a lead-up win often dominate the Winterbottom Stakes odds.

Horses that performed well in events such as the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) – now known as the Champions Sprint – at Flemington if they are travelling across the country or the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes locally are well-fancied in the Group 1 markets for the Winterbottom.

Paulele (11th in 2022), Overpass (8th in 2024) and Libertad (4th in 2025) are the latest Champions Sprint graduates to head east and win the Winterbottom Stakes.

Favourites have a gun Winterbottom Stakes record with eight saluting for the punters from 2006 – 2025 including Buffering for his second in 2015. Buffering also led Winterbottom Stakes betting for his win in 2013 and was the third favourite in as many years to salute that season.

In 2020 there was a notable upset with Elite Street beating a field of better fancied runners as a 30/1 shot in Winterbottom Stakes betting, while Paulele scored an upset at Winterbottom Stakes odds of $13 in 2022.

Overpass ($3 in 2023 and $3.20 in 2024) was the last Winterbottom Stakes favourite to salute. 

Overpass went around as the $2.10 favourite in 2025 only to go down a nose to upset champion Libertad who went around at Winterbottom Stakes odds of $21.

Winterbottom Stakes Field

The Winterbottom Stakes race field attracts a line-up of the spring / summer’s best Perth sprinters.

Interstate talent often also makes the line-up and Robert Heathcote’s Brisbane-trained, internationally performed champion Buffering won the Winterbottom Stakes twice in 2013 and 2015. 

The race has a capacity of 16 starters and the Winterbottom Stakes field was last run at capacity in 2023 when Overpass won from barrier 10 of 16 and again from barrier 16 of 16 in 2024. 

Winterbottom Stakes nominations close a month before the race in October before the final field and barriers are released on the Monday before the event takes place on the Saturday.

Winterbottom Stakes Barrier Draw 2025

The 2025 Winterbottom Stakes final field and barriers are announced on Tuesday, November 25.

The barrier draw is important for the 1200m race, but wide draws have been winning recently.

The final field, draw, and odds are released between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm on the Tuesday prior, with Ladbrokes being one of the first bookmakers to release odds.

Winterbottom Stakes Barrier Statistics

Drawing wide is usually a bad thing in sprint races, but the Winterbottom Stakes is the anomaly. The seven winners up until 2024 drew wider than barrier 10, including Overpass drawing barrier 16 to win in 2024.

Prior to Libertad saluting from barrier 1 in 2025, the last time a winner drew closer than barrier seven was Ortensia in 2011, so punters have to go a long way back to find an inside-drawn runner score the victory. That’s a concern for runners drawn closer to the rail.

However, since 1983, six runners off the inside draw have won most recently Libertad (2025). It typically depends on the size of the field, so drawing close to the rails in a small field is an advantage.

Winterbottom Stakes Betting Guide

Favourites have a mixed record in the Winterbottom Stakes. Overpass won in 2023 and 2024 as the favourite, but the previous favourite to win was Buffering in 2015.

There was a run of favourites winning during that time, including Buffering in 2013, Barakey in 2012, and Ortensia in 2011. However, recent winners besides Overpass, have paid handsome odds at Ladbrokes.

Paulele won in 2022 at $13, and Elite Street scored an upset win in 2020 at $31. There were four double-digit winners in five years from 2018-2022, so it’s a race that any horse can win at Ascot.

Older horses do well, with 13 of the last 18 winners being five or older.
