Winx History
Kiwi expat turned star Sydney trainer Chris Waller has been the man behind plenty of super gallopers over the years, but none quite as impressive as the world’s best mare Winx who was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in May of 2017.
Winx is a horse everyone knows the name of whether they are punter or not. She’s the new Black Caviar and her blue-and-white ‘M’ Magic Bloodstock silks are the new salmon and black polka dot.
Black Caviar bowed out of racing with 15 Group 1 wins and Winx surpassed that first-up in the autumn of 2018 with a record 16th Group 1 victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes and plenty more in sight.
She would go on to set a world record of 17 Group 1 wins on the flat with her third George Ryder Stakes success in 2018 on Golden Slipper Day second-up.
Records are what this daughter of Street Cry is best at breaking and she has written herself into the racing history books on plenty of occasions.
She is currently on 26 straight wins, having overtaken Black Caviar’s record of 25 consecutive wins by taking out the race named in her honour, the Winx Stakes, to start her Spring campaign in August 2018 at Royal Randwick.
The mare’s last loss was back in April of 215 when runner-up to Gust Of Wind, who never won another race before her 2017 retirement, in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick.
The champion, mare is perhaps best known for her Cox Plate three-peat.
She joined the mighty Kingston Town (1980-81) on three wins in the Australasian weight-for-age championship in 2017 after setting the winning margin record the year prior with an eight length title defence.
The 2017 Cox Plate winners’ cheque saw Winx become the highest-earning Australian Racehorse with an incredible $15,577,925 in the bank and counting, more than even triple Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva ($14,526,685).
Winx’s current prize money sits at a whopping $19,290,424 with the $18 million mark surpassed when she won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes for the second time.
That’s not bad for a horse picked up from the Magic Millions 2013 Yearling Sales at the Gold Coast for $230,000.
Winx was Lot 329, sold by breeder John Camilleri, and has proved a genuine fairy tale for connections and racing fans alike.
Winx was honoured with a race named in her honour – the former Group 2 Warwick Stakes that she won in August of 2016 and 2017 upgraded to a Group 1 event worth $500,000 in 2018 and now called the Winx Stakes and she won the inaugural running of this race in 2018.
