Online bookmaker Ladbrokes has slashed the Boomers odds of a shock Rio gold medal after Australia’s own NBA stars steered the team to the brink of an upset win over the United States.
A $51 chance before today, Australia is now a $26 fourth favourite, with the so called “Dream Team” still $1.05 to stand centre of the podium yet again.
“The USA remain a heavy favourite but, in the past few hours, people have been far more inclined to take the big odds on the Aussies than the shorts on America,” Ladbrokes Head of Media, Roger Oldridge.
“We took a fair share of small bets on the Boomers even before today and, while that is largely patriotic money, those punters would be a lot happier with their wagers after this morning’s performance.”
Sitting second in their group, behind only the USA, Australia faces China and Venezuela in its final two pool matches, both of which it is likely to start a clear favourite in when markets open. The Opals are also fancied for a medal, still a solid second favourite at $9 behind the USA women, who like their male counterparts are also $1.05.
