Lauded by many as the best big game player ever, Cameron Smith’s shock retirement from representative football has made his Maroons even greater outsiders for this year’s Origin series.
Ladbrokes bookmakers eased Queensland from $2.10 to $2.60 for game 1 of the series to be played in Smith’s adopted home of Melbourne on June 6, with NSW now a very solid $1.50 favourite.
The line for the MCG encounter shifting from 2.5 points out to 5.5 points, just minutes after Smith confirmed his representative retirement.
With Cooper Cronk and Jonathan Thurston already out of the Origin equation, Ladbrokes had the Maroons a $2.30 outsider for this year’s series, before pushing them out to $2.70 moments after the Smith news broke.
On paper it looks a tough period ahead for Queensland with Ladbrokes bookmakers also framing a market on its next series win.
2018 is the favourite at that $2.70 quote, with 2019 listed as $3.25 and 2020 at $4.50.
NSW fans will be hoping the $9.00 shot lands. That’s the price of the next Queensland win coming in 2023 or beyond.
