Randwick-Kensington Preview – Wednesday 18th March

Venue Mode Plate (1400m) - Race 1 1:35pm AEDT

There isn’t a whole lot of exposed form to divulge ahead of Race 1, but the Anthony Cummings-trained Fayera is the most experienced horse in this field and should find this race her easiest prospect yet. Fayera has finished fourth in each of her four career starts to date, including both the Group 2 Silver Slipper and Group 2 Reisling Stakes. She’s ready to win.

Vinery Stallions Handicap (1550m) - Race 2 2:10pm AEDT

Toffee Tongue has stripped fitter for two competitive runs back from a spell and can break her maiden on the Kensington course on Wednesday. The Tavistock filly finished three lengths from the winner here when resuming before finishing a close second behind Strange Charm last time out. Fitter third-up, drawn well and weighted to win, I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish.

Hyland Race Colours Plate (1100m) - Race 3 2:45pm AEDT

This looks like being one of the more interesting contests on the Randwick-Kensington card. Four of the ten confirmed three-year-olds will be on debut, including a colt by Animal Kingdom, out of Group 1 winner Plucky Belle (Coolmore Classic). I’ll be very interested to see how several of these runners perform with a view towards something later in the season but from a betting perspective, I’ll be staying out.

Lonhro @ Darley Handicap (1550m) - Race 4 3:20pm AEDT

All Time Legend looks a horse with plenty of upside and he can continue his rise through the grades at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday. The Les Bridge-trained gelding had excuses when eighth on debut at Warwick Farm in January and responded with a dominant win at Kembla Grange a couple of weeks ago. This obviously a harder task, but he looks more than up to it.

Vale Trevor Stuckey Handicap (1100m) - Race 5 3:20pm AEDT

Covert Ops is yet to taste anything but success since he returned from a spell and can make it three in a row on Wednesday. The Gerald Ryan-trained gelding did plenty wrong during his first couple of preps but has clearly returned to the track a far more furnished prospect this time and broke his maiden easily at Newcastle first-up before winning in BM64 company last time out. He’ll need some luck from the wide draw but there only looks to be a couple of genuine dangers to his chances in this field.

Heineken 3 Handicap (1400m) - Race 6 4:30pm AEDT

Grand Piano returned a most pleasing effort to beat a couple of smart ones to the line first-up and will only improve for that effort. The Lord Kanaloa gelding found form around some good horses last campaign and mustered an eye-catching turn of foot to score over 1100m here a couple of weeks ago. The small rise in trip will suit and he’ll take plenty of beating again.

Sky Racing Active Handicap (1800m) - Race 7 5:05pm AEDT

This is the strongest race on the card and there is a case to be made for several horses in the market.

Black type performer Re Edit clearly needed the run when she failed to run a couple of weeks ago and I am happy to give her another chance, with the benefit of improvement. The four-year-old daughter of Camelot does tend to take a couple of get going, but I like that she’s taking a decent step up in distance and that jockey James McDonald has elected to stay aboard.

Benchmark 70 Handicap (1100m) - Race 8 5:40pm AEDT

This is another wide-open contest and a tough way to end the day from a betting perspective, but I’ll be happy to have something small each-way on the improving Unguarded. Unguarded returned some competitive efforts through summer without setting the racing world on fire and returned from a brief freshen up last month to finish fourth over 1100m at Canterbury.
