2020 Cairns Cup Preview

The Cairns Cup at Cannon Park on Saturday will be the last feature race of the 2020 Northern Winter Series.

The Winter Series Carnival has marched up the North Queensland Coast since mid-July and the 2100m Cairns Cup will see plenty of runners that have contested one or all of the Rockhampton Cup, Mackay Cup and the Townsville Cup.

Townsville Cup winner Shiranda is looking for a North Queensland Cups double while the Lindsay Hatch trained Kuttamurra Al heads the charge from the South.

Unbiased

Unbiased had some handy Townsville form with three placings before finishing sixth in the 2000m Townsville Cup a fortnight ago.

Unbiased is set to carry the top weight of 59kg and he will be facing similar opposition.

Best Hoffa

Best Hoffa was the winner of the 2000m Mackay Cup with 55kg but then never threatened as favourite when seventh with 57kg in the 2000m Townsville Cup.

Best Hoffa is up slightly in the weights again and is yet to win beyond 2000m.

Shiranda

Shiranda has been racing consistently as he travelled up the North Queensland coast with a third in the 1600m Rockhampton Cup as well as a third in the Mackay Cup.

Shiranda was then rewarded with a win in the 2000m Townsville Cup and is up 2.5kg in the Cairns Cup but still has an each way chance.

Kuttamurra Al

Kuttamurra Al is on the improve and after finishing fifth in the 2000m Mackay Cup was only beaten half a length when third to Shiranda in the Townsville Cup.

Kuttamurra Al is a winner over the Cairns Cup distance of 2100m and is one of the main chances.

North Afrika

North Afrika has worked his way up through the grades with four wins from his last four starts, his latest a three and a quarter lengths all the way win in a 1900m Cairns BenchMark 72 Handicap last week.

North Afrika drops in weight and has to be among the top chances.

Buxton

Buxton started at huge odds when eighth in the 2000m Townsville Cup and then back in class finished second in a 1900m Cairns BenchMark 72 Handicap with 61kg.

Buxton is down in the weight but facing tougher opposition.

Rock Spur

Rock Spur was a winner two starts back in a 1900m Cairns Handicap but the never threatened when tenth in the 2000m Townsville Cup two weeks ago. Just as hard here.

We Just Love It

We Just Love It has been unplaced from his last five starts with his best effort being a last start fourth in a 1900m Cairns Handicap on July 28. Harder here.

Tunero

Tunero ran a mighty race last start when a nose second in the 2000m Townsville Cup and a repeat performance will see him figure in the finish again.

Cinnamon Missile

Cinnamon Missile had handy restricted form at Mackay and Doomben before finishing fourth in the 2000m Townsville Cup a fortnight ago.

Cinnamon Missile is facing similar opposition here but is yet to be tested beyond 2000m.

Art Attack

Art Attack has been sent out as the $151 outsider is both the Mackay Cup and the Townsville Cup and raced accordingly, finishing well down the track and he is facing similar opposition in the Cairns Cup.

Guangzhou

Guangzhou has handy Townsville form with a last start third over 2000m in a BenchMark 65 Handicap. Harder here and is stepping up to the 2100m for the first time.

Paniagua

Paniagua has worked his way up through the grades with wins at his last five starts at Atherton, Mackay and Townsville but will be facing his toughest test to date.

Paniagua is stepping up in class and distance following his latest win in the 1609m 4yo Guineas at Townsville a fortnight ago.

Rocco

Rocco is still eligible for restricted grade. Rocco was a winner two starts back in a 2000m Townsville BenchMark 60 Handicap followed by a third in a 1900m Cairns BenchMark 72 Handicap last week.
